Ayyyy my vinyl shipment got delayed so I was able to cancel it. Thank you to the poor guinea pig who had to find that out and point it out here you saved me 35$ and I'm going to spend it on drugs.
I made a comment on their facebook post about the cut track and it only got 1 like/response in like 12+ hours but according to the response, the CD also includes Unconformities as a track but it's not on the track list or in the liner notes anywhere so to anyone who has only the CD to go by it's just a mystery track?
The fuck is going on with this release lmao.

"Robin Staps explains about the writing process behind Holocene: “The writing process of every album we’ve ever made started with me coming up with a guitar riff, a drumbeat or a vocal idea. This album is different since every single song is based on a musical idea that was originally written by Peter (Voigtmann, synths). He came up with these amazing synth parts that were already sounding huge in pre-production, and he sent me some of those raw, unfinished ideas during mid lockdown 2020… and while it was all electronic, it had that definite Ocean vibe to it. It made me want to pick up my guitar instantly… and so I did, and it didn’t take long until we had an inspiring creative exchange that was heading towards totally unforeseen but very exciting places.”
While Staps took Voigtmann’s initial ideas and “oceanized” them as he says, Voigtmann still pursued his own vision of these ideas, entirely without guitars. This resulted in an ambient electronic parallel album under his alter ego SHRVL, titled “Limbus". "

Fanboying for the band and overall just clicking with the vibes hard right now probably elevates this from a 4 to a 4.5 for me but it's easily a strong 4 either way.
I've had several bands I enjoy try to release albums in this direction and dump actual complete snoozers and based on the 2 singles I listened to, not really remembering Preboreal other than it felt like a buildup/intro and liking Parabiosis a lot but not knowing where the rest of the album would go, I was a little worried and very pleasantly surprised by how hard this album hit even on first listen.

Love everything about this. The concept, the build up, the explosive second half, and the instruments/vocals. This is my jam.

Love this band but the vinyl thing is off-putting. They did the same with the track Holocene at the end of Phanerozoic II, calling it a "bonus track" to justify leaving it off the single LP vinyl. Then in the press release for this album they refer to it as the closer and an idea of the direction they would take for this album. The only way to get Uncomformities on vinyl is to buy the deluxe 4xLP version that is $150. It includes a 10" single that only has Uncomformities on it.

Pelagial and Precambrian go hard but I'm afraid this utterly blows. They've replaced the riffs and compelling songwriting with generic synths and some of the dullest guitar work I've heard in recent memory. It doesn't help that the vocals are insanely overproduced either. This is essentially a modern pop record with a post-metal paintjob. You might as well listen to Sleep Token.

Yeah I love the idea of someone coming into this album blind on this band and enjoying it, very curious what you'll find going back through their discography.
The vinyl thing is definitely off-putting and the expensive versions even only including the song on a separate 10" just downright strange, this will go down as one of the worst and most confusing physical releases of all time, I'd love to see someone from the band at least address it or discuss what they could've possibly been thinking but it will probably never happen, the records will sell out and they'll make their money.
And on one hand, I think bands at this disproportionate level of fame and talent need every dime they can possibly get and it still won't be close to what they actually deserve from the industry, however a hodge-podge shitty physical release like this, whether with the intent of swindling people or not, is not the way.
