Yeah I dunno, it's alright but I really wish they would try and write something with a little more ambition, like Winter's Gate, again.

Yeah as i said before its not particularly a bad track. The problem is its just boring and flat and feels routine. Ill take an bad yet adventerous track over a complacent average one

New track was okay, didn't hate it, didn't love it. They are really hit or miss with their singles. They often release really safe singles (Heart Like a Grave), but also have released some of their best tracks as singles (Pale Morning Star). And also some of their worst... looking at you White Christ. Either way will check when this drops, and hoping it is a step up from 1696 which I found to be their worst record.

i would actually place this second worst - the longer cuts save it
new single is pretty awful though, not white christ awful, but pretty awful nonetheless.

It sounds closer to Shadows of the Dying Sun and Heart Like A Grave than Anno 1696. And I'm all for that.

the Markus fatigue is starting to kick in pretty hard, need the PhD rifflord back asap

Honestly this band has been pretty hit and miss since atww. I'd even say they peaked with their 2nd and 3rd album. Winter's gate was a return to form but honestly still pretty overhyped imo

Definitely more mood, melody and layering minded versus riff focused. Would enjoy if they brought back some riffs. Markus does really solid lead work but as others are saying, the band could really stand to beef it up in the rhythm guitar/riff department. We’ll see what the album sounds like. This might just be “the single” of the album.

Ville Vanni was an extremely solid rhythm guitarist and his departure and Vanhala's arrival is the point in time when you can definitively say Insomnium changed. They got Markus and suddenly you had big changes in sound. Agree that the rhythm guitar department needs revitalizing, however I also truly believe Markus' playing style changed this band and that with him in it they will not ever sound like the used to from a riffing standpoint (which isn't a bad thing for all, I just strongly prefer their old sound).

yea, they aint ever goin back to the olden days especially with what seems like pretty solid commercial success. but I still feel like they could pull another Winter's Gate out of their asses

I think Ville Friman's significantly reduced role in the song writing post One for Sorrow is another major factor.

New song (Gleam in Black) out, it's very good, some very Gothenburg style riffing. I'm sure people will like it more than Shadowlife

Yeah new song is infinitely better, the lead riff is very pleasing. The bar was set very low though with Shadowlife, I regard it as the worst song they have ever produced.

New song is just Ephemeral. Also is the music video AI? Only thing going for this album at the moment is the art

They outdid themselves with Winter's Gate, there's no topping it. I'm glad they're still making music though.
