I've been listening to Katatonia regularly since The Great Cold Distance but Last Fair Deal Gone Down was always my favorite album - until now. I think they're really nailed the modern Katatonia style on this one and the result is a much more memorable album than their last several (all of which are very similar in style to this but just lacking something I could never put my finger on). I would've never expected to get another masterpiece album from Katatonia, especially after the solid but forgettable last few albums, but Sky Void of Stars really started 2023 on a great note and will certainly be in my personal top 10 in December and strongly pushing for top 3 I suspect.

Katatonia sure has it's own style and I'm leaning more towards their heavy period.
These days are long gone and for this sort of sound we can turn to bands like the Ocean and even the last Disillusion album
That said, my favorite album is actually The fall of hearts which is a more experimental album containing both heavy, soft and just weird stuff.
I suppose this what I find a bit lacking these days. However, you could also argue they finally arrived at the core of whats katatonia is about
