I hate this attitude tbh. Artists shouldn't have to justify their artistic choices. If a death metal band wants to release an ambient project and feel that it reflects the mission statement of the band why would they isolate it from that. I only really ever see this in metal, electronic artists and pop artists make way more radical changes from album to album and don't have to justify it. If the 'fans' are pissed off they're shit fans, they don't have to like it but getting mad about it is just projecting their own ideals of the band over the actual artists' which is dumb as shit.

As far as I know, the band advertised this as being a significant departure and an exclusively ambient record. Anyone suffering from buyer's remorse or whatnot at this juncture doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Obviously people are still welcome to dislike it but you can't imply the band was dishonest with their intentions.

that’s the part that makes no sense to me. like, if you wanna get metalheads into synth music, maybe don’t call them idiots right before you release your synth album? that interview, in retrospect, seems disastrous. I genuinely believe this would have a half a star higher average if that interview never drops.

Yeah a good portion of the discussion going awry probably was a timing thing. I actually tend to prioritize smaller releases over larger ones so even though I was reading about the first 10 pages of the thread I missed partaking in the live discussion, so I guess that could be why it came off as a wet noodle, and why I tend to comment in the back half of the threads. Usually I'll forgo it if something was already said, but this time I gave a more live initial reaction because I was still a little amped going in to see how it would turn out.
