I just see this as pop with a retro glaze

I don't think it's novel, but it sure is enjoyable

>because chances are those same people have highly rated recent rap/metal/pop albums that are infinitely more derivative of their respective genres without saying anything

this incredibly based and correct yeah

if I'm not wrong most of the criticism itt hasn't been "this is just ripping off the 70s!" and is more like "this is sterile and disappointing, the guys from the 70s were better"

cuz if those aren't different arguments and I'm just braindead pls correct me

Colton is simultaneously based and also coming out with very much unbased takes, this paradox will cause the end of all we know and love

so much of this album amounts to cheap parlor tricks

not only is bootsy utilized 0%, he actively takes away from the album by bringing this creepy old dude vibe every time he opens his mouth. It’s like they expect us to view bootsy as this sex god but nope, embarrassingly misses the mark and he ruins what could’ve been one of the best songs on the album “uhh toodle-oo” fuck off bootsy

and speaking of obnoxious voices: Anderson .Paak. I’ll admit his singing voice is better than earlier in his career and his duets with Bruno are romantic, but when he does the more rhythmic type flows he sounds like a whiny bitch and his corn levels reach equally embarrassing heights “F-L-Y, it’s like we’re back in school again, c’mon children!”

Bruno is guilty of a few lyrical duds too (fuckin Chuck-e-Cheese) but it’s Bruno Mars, this is expected and his vocal abilities actually do make up for his pea brain for lyrics. Some people can’t accept the Cheese and that’s fine, the Cheese is not for everyone.

i liked all of that lol

it's kinda like they had fun with it and didn't give it much more thought, it's refreshing when people allow themselves to come off as tacky or kitsh in a non-ironic way.

The arrangements are genuinely beautiful at times, and technically competent if not a little sterile. It’s like a Super Bowl performance with a 70’s theme, well-made and easily appreciated, but perhaps missing or masking any identifiable personality.

what do you mean by empty, tho? like, in the way that we tend to devide form from message? "all style, no substance" kinda empty?

I've been re-considering personally about how we take this as some sort of standard for critique. Style is substance, too.

i find it funny when you guys talk about bootsy on this album. from what ive heard from you guys it seems he just talks on some songs. within hip hop thats what he always did. he would pop in to talk and sing. i know theres a somewhat different expectation here but like his track record shouldnt have made you think otherwise

mmmh, i don't seriously SERIOUSLY think people that don't like this can't have fun lol, it's just a bit of trolling.

I do think however that this has a lot of personality and an identity, but it's an identity that sustains itself over being referential in nature. It's a surface, rizomatic identity. Given that this is the basic form identification has taken, it makes sense. What i find is that it's a very gentle album in the sense that it's not a personality trait. Like, i can't really say much about anyone solely based that they like this album. Is that bad or good? i don't know, i think it's not terrible, at least.
