Kanye is immensely talented and while i think he is a better production engineer than an mc he will always be known in the mainstream for his mic prescience and vocal charisma. the average person thinks that most rappers just make their own beats and write their own lyrics anyways.

After listening to this all week, I'm convinced that this has 7 of Kanye's very best songs ever. In a 27 track experience, does that make Donda great? There's an interesting battle going on in my head regarding what constitutes a good album. There's an additional 4-6 songs I could see padding those 7 for a decent 11-13 track record. The rest isn't even poor, I just don't care for it.

If an album can produce so many good songs, and generate so much enthusiasm, is it worth giving a 4/4.5 even though the "hit rate" is only roughly 1 in 4 songs?

the good stuff outweighs the bad...the problem is there is a decent amount of filler and average tracks as per kanye. ive been debating bumping my rating up to a 4 as well.

I mean that's fine if you see it as consistently strong, but from the perspective of someone who sees this as "searching for the diamonds in the rough", the number of diamonds is directly proportional to the overall number of songs. If he dropped a 100 song album and I found 25 of my favorite Kanye songs ever, is that good? Or should it be viewed as "welp, 75% of this ain't my thing"? I could see an argument for either which is why I'm kind of on the fence with this 3.0.

I do think that if there is any hip hop album from this year that still gets talked about 10 years from now, it will be DONDA. I think CLB dropping and immediately being a forgettable dud helps show why albums like DONDA are important. So I'm going to bump it up to a 4 because I think it has the staying power and legacy of an album like yeezus or exmilitary (while both are flawed, are highly influential with very impressive highs).

imo i would give it a 4.5 because 25 all time favorite songs from him means you can make a perfect album of just those songs and that would still be double album length probably

just my thought. i would def give something in that circumstance a 4.5

well you're comparing this to an album meant for the radio so it's not really an apt comparison i think but i do agree and im a massive drake fan and havent even heard CLB lol

I'm generally the same way @Colton, I guess you could call it the glass-half-full mentality or w/e. But at the same time I think part of evaluating music is judging it for its missteps, not simply pardoning them. It's a strange dynamic, because we've been programmed to accept 10-14 track albums, not 27 track behemoths. But the idea that I can form a 10 track album from this that I genuinely enjoy more than Yeezus or even MBDTF still feels like a gift from one of the most talented performers of our time, and shouldn't be a 3/5 even if the album as a whole demands to be judged for what it is. Ugh.

Sowing, i think a more concrete way to look at it (i'm kinda just rephrasing your statement tbh) is if he dropped a 100 track album with 10 great songs, what do you give that? Because if you can listen to the 10 great songs in a row and have a wonderful experience, that's great! But there are 90 other songs that are mediocre or shit. So do you give it a 1/5 for the overall experience, or something higher for what you personally can put together?

Donda's rollout feels verrrry similar to TLOP which ye himself said was an evolving thing. 'imma fix wolves' was a meme for a reason. Donda OTOH had 3 listening parties where we heard these songs come together. Do we take all this in mind when rating?

I think what it comes down to is whether you rate an album SOLELY on OVERALL musical enjoyment, or as a full package experience. To me, the Donda release will be tied to those listening parties, to ye setting himself on fire and then remarrying his ex and all that, the controversial features (unfortunately), etc, etc,. It's why I warmed up to TLOP too, because while in some ways its unprofessional to rollout an album like this, it's something we don't see happen a lot with huge A-list tier singers/rappers.

I think I lean toward rating on overall music because that's like...a normal thing to do. But if you're looking at it like, Donda as an era, if you would talk about his shenanigans as much as the music, I can understand rating it higher

basically what i'm saying is there's no way this is anymore than 3.5/5 tops

DONDA is TLOP 2.0 and will age similarly well. It's only been a week and the discourse everywhere already seems to be much more positive than it initially was. People were confused by Pablo and they were confused by this, but the highs will stick and the not-as-highs will be considered underrated. Buy your DONDA stock now

Custom albums are the future - artists are generative socialism machines. Pure content. Anthony Braxton has spoken for all. Embody YOUR Donda.

There isn't a single song on this album that touches Ultralight Beam or even Wolves on TLOP, really don't get the people saying that this'll age like it.

Wolves is one of the worst songs on TLOP... lol

Jesus Lord, Jail, Come to Life are easy candidates for canonization but give it some more time to let the discourse crystallize more. Historically speaking, betting against Kanye's albums aging well is a losing gambit
