There are heavy tracks on Vector that certainly get tiresome if I listen too frequently, but it was "Veil" where they perfected the blend of their own prog style, melodic vocals, and their recent heaviness, similar to "Falling Back to Earth".
My love for that particular song might compromise the majority of my love for Vector tbh.

Don't mind me the heavy approach, Prosthetic was on rotation when it dropped. We have all come to the conclusion that Ross's voice doesn't fit much on this side of Haken, but that wasn't what bothered me. i think there's nothing really there that I can pick up as an inheremt problem. Maybe it's just that I don't like the ideas they've come up with.

And tbh, while I have my hands on new Ulver, I think I'm going to listen to Haken again today, because 3 or not, they always have a place in my heart

Owh same for sure. I still have this at a high 3,5 / low 4. Doing a discorun today, been a while since I did one of those. Forgot how bloody long Aquarius was lol. Opening your debut with 3 ten minute songs, talking about bold.

Man, I really don't notice the shocking difference in sound like everyone else. I'm glad they explored this side of their sound, even if it's only for this project. For me, Affinity was missing something, so I guess that's the nice thing about having a band explore the multiple sides of their sound.

Revisiting this again for the first time in a few weeks - Invasion is still easily the best cut. There are several good ideas throughout but overall the songwriting was much tighter on Vector imo.

The thing I like about these albums also is that the ideas are a little reigned in. On Visions I felt like songs were long for the sake of it. On these past two albums every song said what it needed to say, or served a purpose for the story in the time it took.
That being said, I clearly love long prog songs so... I guess I just enjoy them trying something new on this bad boy.

I would agreed that Vector/Virus don’t really have tracks that overstay their welcome like their first two albums especially, but the songwriting is still a little suspect to me in places. Prosthetic, for example, feels like they arranged it in about an hour or so in studio, lots of poor transitions. Feels like they had an idea with the chorus and just didn’t know what to do around it. I love the way Messiah Complex begins (great quote of “Host” here also) and the ending is nice having it tie back to the bridge in Prosthetic, but the entire middle section just kind of meanders aimlessly for me.
It’s a decent album overall and these guys are as talented as they’ve always been, but I can’t help but pick it apart while listening. There’s no full composition here that works for me as well as “Puzzle Box” or “Veil”, even if there are a couple individual ideas that I think are really cool.

"Invasion is still easily the best cut."
I seem to really disagree with everyone on this album. I think the first two tracks are the weakest on the entire album, bar the closer maybe.
Never liked these guys so I was surprised at how hard this hit me. I'll give Vector a go too seeing as everyone makes a comparison to this

Prosthetic is easily one of the weakest tracks they’ve put out imo, but Invasion is great. That and Carousel are the two strongest overall. The Strain and Canary Yellow are *fine* but don’t really do much for me.

Messiah Complex and Carousel are the best on this thing. I love how Messiah Complex is pretty much this amalgamation of Vektor and Cockroach King. I don't think I could use the word "meanders" to describe any of this album.

What’s most impressive about Messiah Complex is that it’s a 17 minute prog metal piece, which is a combination of words many music fans would either cringe or show concern for, that manages to actually flow incredibly well, and never feel too long or bloated. I swear it flies by and feels like 8 minutes every time

I'm gonna have to agree. It's generally a song with unique atmoshpere, and I'm glad it clocks around the 4 minute mark.

This is cool. The prog parts are pretty neat. Could do with less djent and less wAcKyyyyyYYYY.

yeah i even like the whiney vocal style on Canary Yellow which I normally hate because the lyrics would not fit with anything rougher.
It could have easily gone into cringe territory but just about avoids it into a pretty amazing song

The more I listen to it, the more I wonder if different "voices" are different characters.

do the lyrics support that thought? It would be interesting, would definitely make me check the albums again in a different mind.
