"Why can't these fools learn from great vocalists like James hetfield and Corey taylor?"
"WHY can't everyone be the GOAT?" lol. Well let's focus on screams. The Corey type growl is more/very difficult to pull off and extremely energy draining. Especially the Iowa one. Maximum output. He mixes it up a little nowadays. So it's maybe 75% of the prime scream intensity and then the the other 25% are "fake". You can pull off the iowa type even with low volume with the right technique. But it will sound less intense and somewhat "fake". Because it is. Many lesser known vocalists do that. There is a fine line and the best vocalists can control that percentage without sacrificing most of the core sound character. But the majority opts for either a high scream (as you noticed correctly) or a very deep growl (inhale being the easiest here). Why do they do that? Because it's more efficient, less stressful (especially live of course) and easier to learn (often: what they learned first). Maybe they will tell you otherwise. People defend who they are and what they (can) do. But there is a reason why early Slipknot was THAT successful despite having close to no singing sections. Big part of that is Corey Taylor and his superior scream.

"Flak fair enough but please stop calling them screams. Screams = screamo. Harsh vocals are not screams, they are a mixture of aggressive shouting, yelling, growls etc. I mean the odd "scream" is fine but screams don't belong in metal, they didn't in the 80s and shouldnt do now"

This is pretty damn boring so far but I won't lie, Chuck Billy sounded fucking great on his guest performance. It's insane to know how good he sounds after he dealt with that throat cancer. He's never sounded so good.

FlakMT Good description and write up. I've been listening to metal for a while, admittedly haven't paid much attention to vocal techniques. Some mentioned Corey Taylor. Anyone help me out, is there a baseline of metal singers used to measure other bands against on technique, quality, etc? Seems like a tough call to make, aside from personal taste.

Chuck Billy is one of my favorite thrash vocalists
Maybe it's a bit of pedestrian choice, but that's just how good he is imho

He's fantastic but it's insane to me how after recovering from the throat cancer, he's sounded the best he's ever been. Like legit, his vocals are top fucking notch
