This is way too fluffy - it might be a 2.5, tbh haven’t listened to this in months now.
It’s a summer album that didn’t light up my summer, end of.
Kinda puny, this being top of the year on RYM is unfathomable to me but lots of people like non-demanding baby’ish music and I should be zen with that

Which could be a good thing if he had the charisma to make different styles still sound his own, but like I was saying on the last page that's not really the case. He's like a footnote on this

I’ve read a lot of descriptions of this album as incredibly moving and that it’s conceptually incredible but like you say, little charisma, non impactful vocal delivery...those things did not translate for me

I was excited about tyler moving into a sound with clear neo soul influences etc but let's face it, the genre is massively oversaturated with mediocre to top notch material these days and considering the disconnect between production and vocals here this falls closer to the former

i think this is such a summer/warm weather album its hard to listen to outside of that, whether you then rate it based on the best possible listen vs the worst possible listen when its pissing it down and youve got shitty coastal winds blowing in your face i guess comes down to personal adjudication

@ryus from this year new lion babe, Sudan archives, jamila woods, tank and the bangas, sampa the great, bells atlas, swindle, taylor mcferrin, tenesha the wordsmith come to mind as similar vein stuff that I've enjoyed much more
