Their slower songs weren't as engaging at the show when I saw them, despite how amazing their ballads can be on the records, like Nobody Else Will Be There and The Dark Side of the Gym. Turtleneck came out great though, and I loved how they changed Afraid of Everyone and made it way louder and more intense. Terrible Love was amazing too. I bet the High Violet tour would've been transcendent to see, setlists must've been legendary.

The ballads were amazing when I watched them in support of 'TWFM' though.
'Vanderlyle' closing the show entirely sung by the audience made me want to weep it was so amazing a moment. Slipped with blue light smothering the stage was incredible. England was a stunner. The performance of Slow Show was one of the most important moments of my life (we use that as our first dance a year or so later at our wedding).
So the ballads, if cast as actual ballads, are for sure highlights.
These in-betweeny sort of 'half-ballads' are just a bit dull live.

Yeah, High Violet or TWFM tours were probably truly legendary yeah, the ratio of good to weak material then was truly incredible.

Gonna plug my "I Am Easy to Find" and "Slipping Husband" mash-up one more time

I'd love to see Vanderlyle live, that definitely sounds like a wonderful sing-along (not to sound like a ponce). I can't imagine Slipped being that thrilling to see live, but who knows.

The worst song when I watched them in support of 'TWFM" was actually 'All the Wine' - but that's still a supposed ultimate fan favourite and went down reasonably well with the crowd. It's just a bit 'mid tempo-y' lacking in energy compared to mid period National. That really stood out watching it live, the drums were a bit lacking compared to Boxer on.
Even when they performed the Hunger Games B-Side 'Lean' it was immense. Like that song a lot since watching it live.

Lean is great yea. Pretty much all their non-albums songs this decade have been fantastic. Exile Vilify would probably make my top 20 favorite Natty songs.

Slipped is good but I like every other song on TWFM even more, except Fireproof.

This was the set list (taken from setlist.fm - useful site), and the venue (Alexandra Palace) is my favourite, almost an indoor open hall festival set up.

Best show I've ever seen, the 'rock mode' version of 'Humiliation' in the encore was insanely good.
You can argue that that set list and tour wasn't the pinnacle of the band but I won't believe you. I needed the TWFM songs in the setlist - but the mix with the older material was perfect.

Lean is better than a fair bit of TWFM if you ask me, killer tune

Gyro - it wasn't just the set list it was the way they reimagined a few songs in a rockier, more gutsy way live - esp Humiliation. That was unbelievable.
They just seemed to be at their peak, ultimate mastery. A few years later and the show just wasn't quite right, nowhere the same level.

i'd add secret meeting, all the wine, baby we'll be fine, sorrow, and sea of love and that would probably be all of my favourite national tracks covered.

This was the one I went to see where I was captivated and gave Matt a slap on the back during Mr. November.
