I am a selective commentator at best but....
This is by a mile their best album. Individual songs have possibly been more rewarding (Lune, Psycosphere/the scourge, Frogging Bullfish and Racecar are big Periphery tracks, for me) but I cannot look beyond the sheer quality of the 2 singles and individual tracks like Reptile, Crush and Satellites (especially the crescendo of the latter), from this album.
For me, then, the improvement in the writing is clear to see. There are further steps to be made, not least the removal of the 'funny' bits- they have their place but a track like satellite doesnt need 'suck my balls' at the end- most people will do their best to skip it. But, while they have always been technically capable, I don't think anyone can deny the improvement collectively, vocally and dare I say... commercially?
Just my thoughts, anyway.

*goes from 4.0 to 3.9*
*nosferatu watches the world burn*
Sorry, I guess? I mean the Periphery fanbase is about as predictable as Periphery's music. First there's an initial explosion of craze and superficiality, and then it settles down and reveals its hollowness, like 5 day old helium balloons for that birthday party nobody ever came to.

polarising band is polarising
seeing a few comments about bland riffing and the likes but relative to what’s available in the genre and the pop sensibilities the band typically espouses, this seems pretty good. I feel like this band is uninspired and trite in their riffing almost as a byproduct of the sound they occupy, and not because they are actually doing a bad job. it’s like the only riffs some people can hear are the 1-5-8s which is a shame because there’s some pretty clever finger work on this album and the songwriting chops are miles ahead of a lot of the band’s early work and contemporaries.
album is considerably more sonically diverse and intriguing than a good deal of shit I’ve heard in metal this year but I guess meat and potatoes is fine if it’s meat and potatoes death metal or meat and potatoes black metal or meat and potatoes not this huh
enjoying my time so far, someone mentioned spencer using the lower side of his register a bit more and it’s definitely a good progression. probably a 3.5. can fully understand the comments about overbloated synths and theatrics

Okay, so I've listened to this all the way through a couple of times and I find this to be a pretty solid album. The vocals kind of make me cringe at times, but these guys are innovators. It's good to see there are still some progressive metal bands out that continue to evolve from album to album.
I'm giving this a very solid 4.

Honestly, you should get fucking banned if that's how you rate this band. Call it average, if that's what you want, fine. But at this point it's just people rating an album low just to lower the score.
