the only good thing about Kyo's vocals in Sukekiyo is the low stuff, the rest of his vocals have that terrible choking twang from when he fucked his voice without lube

I like all of those examples, especially Hidauta. In that part specified with how the lyrics pan out it makes it even more disturbing. Going from a knackered, desperate exhausted man to a whistle within seconds in increasing intense delivery is brilliant for me and the instrumentation accompanies that perfectly.”
I agree it works sometimes but I think he uses it too much to the point where it loses any impact it once had. Like if Kyo did that freak out part from Red Soil on 20 other songs it would sound forced and irrelevant to the feel of that specific song after awhile. But clearly there are people who enjoy it, I just like his performances in DEG a lot more for the most part, although he sounds great in the ballads like Hakudaku and En and such.

@Jas I really can't agree with you there. I like most of his vocals with Sukekiyo. Though I am surprised he can still perform at all at this point.

He fucked up his voice up from screaming wrong in the WTD to TMOAB era but he's learned proper technique and sounds a lot better live than he did for a while there. I actually like his high clean vocals in sukekiyo like in Hakudaku and Kugui. I just don't like how he approaches some vocal styles stylistically in that band vs DEG. But he can clearly still do those vocals since he does them on here and in concert. The only vocals that bug me on here are the sort of butt-rock sounding ones on some parts of Values of Madness (and some weird voice cracks during growls in Utafumi and The Deeper Vileness remake) but it's only that song so it doesn't really bother me much. At least it's better than his vocals on R to the Core ugh lol.

@aubergine Values of Madness is just an awful song in general. I like Toshiya's bass playing, but if that's his idea of a good song, I'm glad we haven't seen a solo project from him.
Although it might be pretty funny.

Replace Withering and Marrow w/Uroboros and DSS, then I’d actually agree with you there.

Agreed. He only started having serious problems with his throats during DSS. Not to say he didn't do damage during those albums mind

No, I’ve been doing harsh vocals for ten years and I can tell he used proper technique on DSS and most of Uroboros. WTD and especially TMOAB are definitely where he was doing damage to his voice, it just took a few years for the damage to catch up to him. Even correct screaming techniques put some wear and tear on your vocal folds but he’s learned how to minimize it.

If you watch 09 lives he does this inhale growl which is apparently very damaging, oh and you had vocal polyps with the DSS tour. Their obscene amount of live dates contributed to that too.

Ftr he's pushing his voice to its limits on dss regardless of technique. He's sort of alternating between "safe distortion" and fuckery too since songs like Diabolos still have inhaled stuff

In the context of Sukekiyo, yeah I agree Jas. His lows work really well w/the band’s songwriting. Unfortunately, they only hit the spot when I’m in a peculiar introspective mood. Hence why I can’t/don’t listen to Sukekiyo that often...actually I haven’t listened to DEG much lately if at all.
IDK, maybe after 4 years of listening to DEG quite regularly (almost weekly), I've finally burnt out on the band and/or I just want to move onto other bands and genres that are more relevant and resonate with me the strongest in the present that I might've neglected or didn't check out because I was too focused on DEG for so long.

Getting burnt out on a band is something that can happen. I've been a fan since WTD and listened to them almost daily for a long time. Now I go back to them every once in a while. Usually when reading the forums here and getting reminded about certain songs, then I'll go on a short binge before forgetting about them again for a while.

after a few weeks of delays Okami's EU release has dropped so I finally managed to get a physical copy of this. still an underwhelming album but a nice one to have in the collection.

I've never burnt out on DEG; I still enjoy their good albums as much as I ever did. That said, I was never a super fan by any means, though I would rank Uroboros in my top 10 albums ever, and I only ever liked some of their discography. I always found the people paying for VIPs and whatever to be somewhat incomprehensible.
Even back in 2014 when I first started listening to them, I also listened to loads of other bands regularly.

As far as admiration goes, I'm only really in for their 2008-2014 era. I do like a lot of their other stuff, but none of it surpasses the "very good" mark for me. Uroboros, DSS and Arche are the best three album run ever though imo, with DSS as a contender for my favorite metal album (that would be 4th place overall) and Arche and Uroboros not too far from that.
