This is hardly the most accessible album by APC. None of them are accessible, which is why they are amazing.

Not accessible? This is a more subtle offering, but all their work is accessible imo.

This is Maynard's best vocal performance. He's absolutely incredible on this.

How so? I really would like to know why people think this is his best performance.

To me (aside from a few songs), this is a far cry from his best years (which was about 1996 to 2004). Most of the time Billy's composition saves the song for me, while Maynard's delivery feels very flat most of the time

His best performance was easily Aenima

For me it was a tie between Lateralus and Mer de Noms, but Aenima is pretty close.

I mean fucking hell for example that A4 belt in H is outrageously good

Angry/bitter Maynard is best Maynard

Aenima is the most consistently in that mode

He reaches his highest beast mode in Third Eye, The Grudge and Tick & Leeches imo

Nah, that album is too pop/MTV-courting and too mystic-zen mumbo jumbo for me

Aenima-lite, and that includes Maynard’s approach - he didn’t sound genuinely peeved off anymore

To me at least. Guess his vocals might be more controlled/technically superior though.

Yeah, i guess it's a matter of taste. His control was incredible in the early 2000's

Yeah, too much - sounds like a watered down/less abrasive Aenima

Then the dude went full pop forming this fucking band

Lateralus vids were on MTV all the time, they even stopped putting in as many swears - album is glossy

Maynard is obviously excelent in Tool, but he's given so much more room here to breathe. He showcases more vocal styles and greater range than he's done on any Tool record and nails it all.

Tool's music tends to come together better and I suspect that's why people will prefer his earlier efforts.

Maybe on the surface they are, but APC have a lot more to offer than just that. People keep throwing Tool around and use that as a standard. We've already established neither are similar, so why do we keep regressing? A Perfect Circle is seldom bitter in subject matter. Most assume a more emotional standpoint and tackle the songs from that standpoint alone. "Thirteenth Step" tackles rehabilitation. "Mer de Noms" sails through the sea of names in hopes of finding their purpose. There's nothing inherently bitter in those albums. "Judith" and "The Outsider" at best could be described as angry, but they regard a subject who doesn't understand the situation that they're in. "Judith" is about Maynard not understanding why his mother worships a God who causes her torment; "The Outsider" is about the subject bashing a suicidal person and not understanding how to help that person.
