Basically what I'm gathering is that this album/band has elements of things I do like combined with elements of things I don't like, so it sounds like it could really end up anywhere for me.

So far, so very good. I'm glad and Andy and Co. are being more adventurous again. Every song on Cope was catchy for sure, but nothing groundbreaking or terribly memorable. Upon first spin this seems a lot more where I want them to head

Nah the way his voice cracks and the way he annunciates some things has a very distinct mwY vibe, just minus the screaming/shouting especially here. I've always gotten that from him dating back to I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child. Not identical by any means, they just carry similar mannerisms/inflections.

@SowingSeason Is this a good jumping on point, or should I go with Simple Math?

I'd start with Mean Everything to Nothing or Simple Math; I was introduced to the band through both at about the same time and now they're one of my favorite groups. This is actually probably better than METN in my opinion but only because of the context of the previous albums, and the fact that it followed Cope which is easily their worst record. If you just want to get to their best stuff first, then yes, listen to Simple Math.
Every album besides Cope is really good though.
