well that was interesting
last time i saw the full band was in 2015 on the "get high see everyone tour", and at that show, they played a very similar set to all of the past times i'd seen them up until that point -- all their "hits" plus a bit of stuff off throw me in the river. v v predictable set; i remember feeling a little disappointed in that (but the songs were still killa).
so i havent seen the band in a few years, and was rlly in for a surprise at this show. the setlist was pretty varied: just one song off the debut (fish, but no sigourney like wuuuuut), two songs off sunshine (face and drunk), and the rest were from the past couple albums (nothing off the EPs or singles). the weirdest thing was that when i'd seen them in the past, they played the songs pretty much like how they sound on the record except more emotionalllll. but this time, every song was noticeably slower and super heavy, almost like an alt-rock revival/grunge band (havent seen violent soho live but i imagine smithies kinda sounded like that). dunno if its just cuz of the new drummer, as i didnt see them on the last few tours with cowburn. also no jess and lucy today; maybe they're still jetlagged
was still a blast. free gig at a uni so i guess ppl didnt know a lot of their catalogue (like, a lot of ppl werent even singing along to the throw me in the river tracks, which was surprising; biggest singalongs were the new album songs and "young drunk"). guess im just used to everyone around me knowing all the words at normal smithies gigs. anyway they just happened to play songs that i actually knew all the words to, so was screaming my guts the whole time. heres what i remember of the setlist for comparison with pool house party and the upcoming aus tour (not in any order cuz cant remember; they started at pretty much exactly 1 and finished at exactly 2--exactly as billed--so maybe they had to cut down the set to fit a strict 1 hour time constraint cuz ppl have class; anyway SPOILER ALERT):

Was so happy when they played When I Was a Boy.

yeaaaaaa i mean any album 1 tracks are a victory but that one is fuckin esp. killer; i think wil knows how special it is cuz they played it as an encore last time i saw them in 2015, and it's still in the set now. if any no one gets lost cut is gonna survive, im glad its that one.
how bout all those ppl gettin on shoulders? i saw wil give one em a headshake like "yeaaaa maybe dont do that" but he was still smilin and laughin (actually saw him give the exact same shake to a crowd surfer second time i saw them; was a totally flashback moment)

interesting set indeed, wonder if the set has more new stuff as it's a uni crowd and perhaps trying to play songs that perhaps they know? I do hope we get some treats at pool house such as a track from first ep and a few NOGL tracks.
and I agree dim that in 2015-2016 i'd seen them a lot and their live show was becoming predictable, probably why they've added lucy and jess and tried to make things more grandiose in scale

It was cool toward the middle/end, but the first dude who did it on the left bothered the heck out of me. A group of four of them pushed in front of me during the first song only to talk over the next few songs, not paying any attention to the stage; and then they got on each other's shoulders. Then they hecked off, though, and the people who were doing it in the middle were cute. :3
Sean Bonette gave my friend that same look when he decided to crowd surf at the Gaso, was incredible.

yea the first few shoulders ppl definitely seemed a like they were just attention grabbing, but it did evolve into kind of a nice thing when ppl kept doin it later on. and faaaark them pushers, man. ugh.
also haha sean doin that does sound incredible; i unno why cuz its such a simple gesture but just imagining it is hilarious
I do hope we get some treats at pool house such as a track from first ep and a few NOGL tracks.
maaaaan i dont know if they even play south east facing wall songs anymore. like years ago when snox was in the smithies threads talkin about the band, he recounted this one show where they did "dress up shoes" as an encore and it was fuckin crazy even back then. as i said b4 i havent seen em in years so i wouldnt know what they're gonna play or how long their sets (+ encores) are nowadays (if you're really curious maybe there's some info on those setlists sites? might be a bit of a spoiler tho) but HERE'S HOPIN YOU ENJOY SOME OLDIES THIS WEEKEND!!!
also fun fact: snox was standing next to georgia maq at that show while she was on some guys shoulders (i think theres a photo of it somewhere); this mighta even been b4 she and wil were dating but maybe not i unno

dude i was at the gig where they did dress up shoes at the corner and GMaq (lol) came out and sang it with him, was pretty amazing but i didn't even know of the song at that point so it was kinda wasted on me ):
and thanks man fingers crossed they do something special!!

got a setlist of mainly the most recent two records at pool house party tonight, also got Belly of Your Bedroom which was great to hear live with Lucy! Pretty proud to see how far the guys have come these last few years.

yeaaaaaaaa would be a shame if lucy actually bein in the fuckin band now didnt lead to them playin "belly". did they also do "scare"? fuckin looooooove that song (the part where lucy takes the high and wil takes the low is just ughhhhhhhhhh tooooooo gooooooood "you taste like milk and cigarettes and that's all i could ever ask of you")
