Probably in poor taste though I guess.

If this has a flaw it's that it's maybe a bit too melodically/instrumentally plain in parts but I think it all works very well. I definitely see what people meant about "sad stripped down folk" being overly simplistic though.

I'm too lazy to argue my point so I'm just going to copypasta my soundoff.

I feel for this guy, but singing (or in this case, talking) about death does not automatically make a work profound or interesting. Nick Cave's record was essential because you could hear the devastation at every turn. Sufjan's was massive because it mastered the sound of modern indie folk. This could have just been a series of poems, and no effort is applied to make this into anything more than that. I understand the goal isn't for this to be an interesting listen for consumers, and it is a cathartic vessel for him or whatever, but there's absolutely nothing here of musical significance and he conveys absolutely nothing emotionally to transform this artistically; it's just someone lost and devastated with a guitar. A classic album that does not signify by default.

lol

I know my musical taste wavers all over the place and I like more pop than most, but I'm also pretty well-versed in indie and lo-fi, and this just does nothing for me. I understand why others connect with this and they're entitled to do so, but musically/emotionally this is pretty much a wash of nothing.

I gave it a 2 because some of the lyrics are truly impactful and I appreciate good writing.

"musically/emotionally this is pretty much a wash of nothing"

I object to your objective phrasing; for me (both musically and emotionally) this is stunning in its subtly. Regardless its a shame you don't enjoy this, but its fair enough

Also I disagree with your entire argument in your sound off, but again, each to their own
