Newsflash: he's not really a singer
I don't think the genre classification matters - punk ethos, DIY basic music
Don't think they're pretending that they're The Clash

TVC I can hardly bare to ask this...who are an 'authentic' punk band?

Punk music =/= punk rock, punk is definitely more of an ethos than one explicit musical style
|

Interesting that people would respect the punk ethos and DIY attitude in a band, then shit on a band like the Arrogant Sons of Bitches or Bomb the Music Industry

I waited 27 years to join this site, hoping that "What makes punk punk" arguments had been settled.

There is no truly authentic punk. Once you record music with the intent to share it or sell it, you're no longer punk. You're just a fucking sellout

I thought people were happy claiming Death Grips were a punk or part punk band :/
Punk isn't just nose rings and Mohawks, otherwise Rancid would be a punk band when they're clearly a pop band :D

I don't actually like punk music that much Dinosaur... In fact I'd say I dislike it in general

DinoJ - the music has to still be good to my ears. I don't wish death upon Jeff Risingstock but it would be insincere if I pretended to like his music just because I respect his ethos/work process

I gotcha, Doof.

The thing differentiating all music fans is whether they think "Three chords and the truth" is a better definition for punk or country. I think everyone knows on which side I fall.

Dunno, 50% of the humour is lost on some non natives I'd guess. Nearly every other lyric here is funny as fuck

That's why I concede I may just not be getting a lot of it.

Authentic punk? Off the top of my head I'd say, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Misfits... There's obviously a pattern here, I sympathize most with the old stuff. The bands that were angry with everything, innovating in some way be it their attitude like the Pistols or like The Stooges where they did it with their sound
Late response, sorry

Typical savages, can't decipher the wit behind a carefully constructed facade of colloquialisms

But like Zip said. I remember watching this X Factor video where this dude was auditioning with a Nirvana song where he wanted rock to become more relevant. Simon Cowell called him a sell out cos his approach at reviving it and whatever goes against what Nirvana symbolized and pioneered for and he got booed off stage despite doing a hell of a job at singing the song

Lol @ X Factor.

It's ok, this band aren't trying to be the exact same as those other bands really. They're a bit 'post modern' dare I say, a bit cheeky, very funny - but also angry and dead eyed focused on their targets.
The Stooges did their thing but no less than Iggy himself said these lads are the only real punk band around in 2017. So one old punk loves them.

This sounds more to me like hip hop than any brand of punk. And I didn't necessarily mean the Johnny Rotten comparison as an insult or criticism although it likely came off that way
Also if we go by some strict definition of punk, the two latest Moby albums have certainly filled that void (no pun intended) extemely well imo. I remember when These Systems finally clicked with me and it was like hearing Nevermind the Bollocks for the first time with me
