"Again all genres have their gems and their share of shit but pop music seems much more skewed towards the latter than others."

how much pop u listen to, again?

"but I know alot of people myself included use the term to describe a particular vapid style of modern electronic/R&B/hip hop"

people describe "metal" as "just mindless noise and satanic screaming" all the time tho

interesting discussion itt, I would argue that it's unnecessarily complicated by the fact that genre tags by nature are silly and have to cover a lot of wildly differing styles of music inside them. if there was some universally recognised exact boundary to what is and isn't pop it would be a lot easier to talk about this but without that as balls said we could be arguing about two completely different subjects here

metal and rock is just as vapid, if not more vapid, than 95% of pop music.

i think it's pretty obvious almost (almost) everyone here is using the not-decades-old definition of pop, which doesn't encompass all genres ever save for classical and/or jazz, allmusic.com style, nor just anything that's popular, ever

Just whatever makes the top 40 these days when I'm forced to at work (i.e electronic/R&B/Hip Hop/country pop)

These are usually pop music fans talking - i.e - the musically oblivious, naive etc. Everyone I know who's into their music be it whatever genre can at least appreciate that metal is a lot more than that

I think pop is a much broader genre than you're realizing here

there's probably as many sub genres of pop as there is metal

pop is not what u think it is. period. get some actual valid, real, honest experience with the genre, then u'll say more sensible stuff

edit: i'll even pretend to be productive and give u a list cl0ver made that can make me seem like a productive person:

'Any beginner recs then?'

Janelle Monae, Regina Spektor, Robyn, AlunaGeorge, Susanne Sundofr, Sia, Karin park, St Vincent, Lights, Bleachers, Kimbra, Imogen Heap, Bjork, Justin Tumberlake, Julia Holter, The Beatles, Kid Cudi, Sara Bareilles, Clarence Clarity, OneRepublic, Frank Ocean, pepe deluxe, beach house, pre-blurryface 21P, ellie goulding, john mayer, daughter, mystery skulls, adele, iamwhoiam, mae, foxy shazam.

just a random selection from the last 6 or so years off the top of my head that are both popular and not as popular that i think best capture pop in the modern age. i can branch out into older cuts from the 2000s or before, along with more mainstream cuts if you so desire.

Why does metal get thrown into every pop argument and vice versa...
Metal fans (like legit ones, lifers) are among the worst music fans imaginable, I would rather hang out with some pop fans (read: hot chicks) than some grubby metal heads arguing about trigger and the virtues of "real amps vs Axe Fx".
Note: I like metal and dicks (as someone will inevitably say)

Heres a rhetorical question for everyone - If Rihanna releases a new track but no one ever hears it, is it still pop music?

@ballsdeep
what point are you trying to prove fr tho?
the fact that you're really good at embodying the cringe metalhead stereotype?

@ballsintodeepass- Here's a question for you, if *shitty hipster metalhead approved band* put out a new track and no one hears it, is it still metal?

Not sure exactly, I'm just wired on a ton of dex and they make me all contentious. I guess one point to be made is that literal pop music has really gone down the shitter in the 21st century.

it's actually better now but it ok, i'd rather take the opinion of someone who is actually knowledgeable on the subject, aka someone who actually has consumed pop
