coming into a discussion about music with fellow fans with a long winded way of saying my way or the highway isnt exactly advised

“You assume a lot here. You can't possibly like every single piece (however fucking big) of musical history ever created. You're bound to find something you dislike every now and again. And assuming that the lower rating crowd haven't tried hard enough is also kind of silly. Nothing is for everybody!”
The first paragraph pretty much addresses your first point, and my comment was more directed at those who move on after only a listen or two and never come back. If you tried the album several times over a long period of time and still didn’t like it, that’s totally fair even if I can’t understand the perspective.

For the record I always ride hard for subjectivity and even further don’t think there’s really such a thing as a piece of music that demands respect (hmm maybe) much less demands you liking it (definitely). It’s just that this album, which is very very respected, also happens to be like the best album ever and hits all the points I want out of music, it’s inventive and beautiful and emotionally resonant. The songs are great as pieces of writing on paper—i.e. they’d be great performed by any sort of band/performing forces—but they’re perfect dressed up in Wilson’s orchestral garb. I think everyone has such albums that push the limits of how much subjectivity you can handle haha, even though you still believe in that principle. Maybe not tho

True that! To quote something appropriate:
''Now how can I come on
And tell them the way that they live could be better''

Fair enough, but I dunno man, what if someone on here came through and 1’d pink floyd’s Entire discography, wouldn’t you feel a bit of pushback—feel a little bit that they are Wrong—even as you defend their right to do so
I used to be a complete subjectivity hardliner. I remember arguing with Adam downer all day about this stuff

if at any point one actually starts to believe their own bullshit you should truly stop everything you are doing in that moment to meditate on the fact you were momentarily lost in the delusion of your own ego

at most id ask why and if youd given it a proper chance
theres not doubt that sometimes people are definitely being edgy for the sake of it and if i get a whiff yeah ill call someone out on it but to act as if there is some sort of perfection or ideal in art that is objective whatsoever is completely irrational

I think we essentially agree then. Maybe “pushing the limits of subjectivity” etc is the wrong phrasing: again, I believe there’s no opinion that’s off limits as regards what you find good and bad

good to find some agreement there
and i agree with longshot in that if something is critically acclaimed its going to be worthwhile to try and find that magic for yourself, thats probably why we all flock to sites like this to get a sense of where consensus opinion lies and try to discover that magic, but sometimes it just isnt there
diversity of taste and opinion is built into us, and all perception is unique

not only am i a hardliner this is an admittedly big pet peeve of mine so apologies if im coming off overly rude
at the same time i think this concept is important for people to grasp and when one does it ultimately makes you more humble and receptive to diversity of opinions in a variety of things beyond art

And just to reiterate what I said in the first paragraph of my rant, I don’t believe in something being “objectively good”, I just think that widespread acclaim and an album having a large impact on a large amount of people merits giving it more respect than just a one-listen 2 and moving on

Am I not allowed to respect this album & also dislike listening to it? I would never attempt to discredit its importance.

Friendly discussion! Love it. Here at least are people trying to understand each other's views.

You’re allowed to do whatever you wish, I can’t stop you lol. My point was just that I hope people try not to make a habit of dismissing acclaimed/cherished albums after one listen (which I’m not saying you or anybody else necessarily did here).
