this is their most shoegaze trope-y album
I only really like PPP and Space Song - Levitation and Sparks sound like shoegaze on autopilot to me, pleasant enough but meh
this band released a whole album of identifiable, well written toons on Teen Dream, each song had its own personality
this one is a bit of a slog, even the best bits sound a lot like Bloom with added MBV worship. Maybe if you don't t tackle the albums in order then this would sound amazing - I don't have that luxury, I'd already digested Teen Dream and Bloom. I know these tones, I know these melodies.

u feel about this seemingly the exact way i feel about teen dream and bloom, but i def heard this before both of them. the songs on those all bleed together for me, minus lazuli and wishes and a couple of more. i also am just v into the dreary and wistful nature of this album as a whole

Well Doof, I can’t say that you’re wrong about that - full disclosure, this was the first Beach House I heard and I listened to it before any shoegaze. That said I originally still throughly Bloom and Teen Dream were better than this so idk if heading this first really made a difference. Teen Dream has better songwriting than this but this has a better balance of great songwriting and gorgeous fuzzy atmosphere.

If I’m honest I just prefer Dream pop to shoegaze as an influence, sort of looking forward to the new one - I’ll revisit this

I mean, imo Sparks is the only particularly shoegaze thing here, the rest is distinctly dream/ambient pop just with fuzzy synths.

mhm dream pop as shoegaze is vague enough to basically be interchangeable. what's preferring shoegaze to dream pop, just the same thing but with some fuzz pedals? heh.

the pop bit implies more distinct song writing/a songful quality - plus more of a focus on vocals/vocal melodies

Yeah I mean there’s a lot of shoegaze that overlaps with dream pop but there’s just as much that has nothing to do with dream pop just as there’s plenty of dream pop with no shoegaze. The terms are definitely not interchangeable.

i guess it all depends on the user, then. even went as far as looking on wikipedia for a general idea of what separates dream pop from shoegaze.
"developed in the 1980s.[1] The style is typified by a preoccupation with sonic texture and atmosphere as much as melody.[8] It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegazing, and the two genres terms have at times been used interchangeably."
but that's wikipedia.

They might have been more interchangeable in the 90s but today where you have a lot of shoegaze that has more in common with metal, post-punk, noise rock and even ambient the two definitely cover different spectrums of music.

I guess I wouldn't call 'Loveless' dream pop...and I wouldn't call 'Teen Dream' shoegaze

I haven’t listened to the album yet but that’s how I felt about the singles, melodies/songwriting are pretty lame
