I'd let my Tool albums collect dust for about a year because I grew bored of them. I finally pulled this one out again and I'm going to take an unpopular opinion and say this dominates Lateralus.

I like Rosseta stoned

Great review. I think the last half of the album may grow on you. Just like their previous two albums, the last few songs on it are the more musically in depth, experimental songs. Basically the casual listener would usually take out the cd after the first half, the more "hardcore" Tool fan, like myself, would find themselves lost in the second half from time to time. I'm happy with the lyrics and how he sang them on rosetta stoned, cause it's differant and there is more humor there, although you can't understand a word of it, it's something different.

Finally got a copy of this from a friend.
I'm pretty excited about finally hearing this, and I like what I hear so far.

I just saw them live last night for the first time and it was great. Adam had a half-ass amp that blew up during Lateralus and Danny along with the drummer of Melt Bannana eneded up filling the time with amazing drum solos for about ten minutes. Adam was pissed.

The only thing I didn't like about the title track is that it took for fucking ever to pick up.

Schism doesn't sound like Vicarious IMO.

This album kinda is a paradox for me. Honestly...I think its Tool's worst CD to date. I'm a HUGE Tool fan, but I think the other albums were a lot more consistant. I mean, hell, I think Lateralus is the best album ever made...
But anyway. I liked your review, but like the guy above, I didn't think Vicarious sounded like Schism...I think it sounded like Tool, if that makes any sense. For me, I think "Jambi" is the best Tool song ever written. Its the most unique and is the band at the top of its game. The 2nd verse with its poly-rhytums are simply amazing. The power are brutality of the song just always sucks me in...I can listen to it all day. I think Vicarious and The Pot, although enjoyable, are pretty average Tool songs. I really dig them, but I dont think they compare with "Jambi"
I think the Epic 2 parter is enjoyable, but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it as is "Rosetta Stoned". The later I enjoy mostly due to Justin's playing...but, Maynard's lyrics really suck on it, I'm sorry, they do. I was really dissapointed with it. As somone said "he said, 'God Damn, Shit the bed'"...I mean, come on?
The rest of the album, I can't stand! The rest is pretty much filler, with the exception of "Right In Two", which I have tried and tried to get into, but I just can't. I find it incredibly boring, even though Maynard's lyrics are well written on it. The music just doesn't captivate me...
For the sheer brilliance of "Jambi" and the solidity of "Vicarious" and "The Pot" and the (at times) enjoyable 2 parter and "Rosetta Stoned" I give this a 3/5...I wish they progessed a little more from the brilliance of "lateralus"...maybe for the next album?

ive always thought jambi to be a monumental song. it was easily one of their best performed live, up there with aenema and pushit. the album definitely dies down following 10000 days, and lyrical work on right in two and rosetta stoned does fall short of what you would expect of MJK.

I can't say that this features any of Tool's best work. The Pot and Jambi are both amazing, but are edged out by half the tracks on Aenima. I never really liked the 10,000 days epic (am I the only one?) and find that Rosetta Stoned and Right in Two are the only stand-out tracks near the end.

Okay, I may be missing out on some details, but since the first time I heard this months ago, I still can't help but wonder... How the fuck is Vicarious anything like Schism?
