I think the production adds to the bleak atmosphere here, which i love.

Layne deliberately wanted to mess around with fuzz boxes and weird effects for his vocals, I like the production in Tripod because it fits the mood and state of mind they were in at the time.

In hindsight, I think Dirt almost sounds a little too polished.

Worst song imo is So Close. Especially the start destroys the atmosphere built up by God Am.

Yeah I bumped this to a 5 yesterday, and I was basically giving america a ribbing because it's so easy for anyone to buy guns there. low-hanging fruit joke

your analysis is pretty spot on, although you have to remember a fair amount of their lyrics were written by Cantrell as well, so it's not just Layne's life they're chronicling. I've always thought Heaven Beside You was a conversation between two people actually (maybe even Layne and Jerry?) with the softer vocals in the verses and choruses having a more positive outlook (be what you wanna be/see what you came to be etc.) while the distorted vocals in the second chorus is the nihilistic, pessimistic response (I'm just see-through faded, super-jaded, out of my mind), and the way the perspective changes in the last chorus is each character talking about each other - the positive one tells the other "and you know you have it still, heaven inside you" and the negative one replies with "you're just see-through faded, overrated" etc. just a theory

"If I Could, Would You?"

The line is actually, "If I Would, Could you?", which is a more complex and dense question and I've never quite been able to figure out what it really means. Is Staley warning the listener about how easy it is to turn into Andrew Wood? Is he admonishing the listener for thinking the fight against drug addiction is easy? Is he admonishing Andrew Wood for succumbing to his drug addiction? Is he commiserating with Wood because he finds himself in the same situation? Is he berating himself for not understanding just how dire Wood's situation is until he found himself walking in Wood's shoes?

And yeah, while Cantrell wrote most of the lyrics, he's clearly (to me anyway) chronicling Staley's life. Songs like No Excuses also seem to be written for Staley. Down in a Hole appears to be written about Staley. It's a little weird and voyeuristic to listen to Cantrell find his muse and inspiration in Staley's descent, but it makes for great music so hey...

I always interpreted it as "if I would try and save you, could you do your half?" myself

I think Cantrell took influence from what was happening to Layne for sure, but to claim all their songs are just a chronicle of Layne's life is pretty out there. Remember that Cantrell went through a divorce and got addicted to drinking himself during Dirt. He had plenty of his own troubles to draw muse from

I honestly have no idea what Cantrell had going on in his personal life. Apart from it being well known that Rooster was about his father's experiences in Vietnam, very little about Cantrell's personal life is publicized, let alone on the scale that Staley's was.

'Heaven Beside You' specifically is about a relationship Jerry had with a woman that went sour. It's one of the songs Layne didn't write for the album.
