I'm so excited to see these guys. Probably will be the craziest show I've been to in recent memory, then I can see The Chariot and die in peace.

3rd highest metal album of all time already.

this review reads more like a 3.5 than a 4.
"But would the killer moments be as killer if the lulls weren't there to highlight them?"
calculating infinity?
idk this sentiment applies to a lot of things, but i feel like with an album, if its hard hitting all the way through, then that elevates the whole to a different level entirely
really good review though otherwise. i dont get why people dont like you.

You're probably right, Kitsch. I was struggling to come up with a score for the album until the last minute, and I originally thought less of the album-- so it probably does read a bit lower than what I decided on. I guess the score is my respect for the band shining through, because given the band's history, I find it hard to not enjoy everything the album has to offer. The context just makes it especially enjoyable for me.
And thanks man! Haha, I think there are just a few people that think rather negatively of me (and those people happen to be of the louder variety, so it may seem worse than it really is.)
|
| |
And also, Kitsch, I agree that an entirely consistent album (quality-wise) is brought to another level. Honestly, I find albums like that so rarely that when it does happen, I'm considerably impressed. Even some of my favorite albums have tracks I don't care as much for, so when that doesn't happen I can't get enough of it.

This statement is both absolutely true for a lot of music and very annoying because it shouldn't be
Anyway, I respect you, so yay :]

(because it shouldn't be; considering something better than it is because the albums before it were good just doesn't feel right in principle, but it still carries a lot of weight in reality)

Very true. Context is pivotal for music, as much as we'd like to believe otherwise-- if Radiohead releases an album that consists of farts, some will still find things to enjoy about it because it's from Radiohead. Sure, it's an album of farts, but it's from someone who has proven their worth-- so people will give it more of a chance. Yada yada.
|
| |
it's not always like that tho
disappointment can be a lot greater when you have a history with a band, too - people generally are a
lot more critical of things(in this case albums) from stuff(this case bands) because it disappointed
them and all, etc etc etc
|
| |
Oh, I agree with you completely. And I'm sure there will be a backlash of sorts for this album, because some will probably view it in the lens of "well, it isn't as consistent as OP, and sometimes it feels like they're rehashing ideas, etc etc." which is perfectly reasonable.
People know my respect for this band-- I'm certainly not expecting everyone to agree with me on this. But some will see it the way I do, at least.

agreed. and i feel like when i like most of an album, i come to like the tracks that i dont like, or wouldnt like otherwise, even more. sometimes eventually they become my favorites.

For me, the more tracks I dig on an album the more I want to dig the others. So I definitely get what you're saying. I think it's partially an intimidation thing-- maybe that's the wrong word, but when I know an album only has three songs I love, I don't feel particularly enthused about acquainting myself with the rest of it. I need to be more thoroughly impressed by it
