I love this and it still continues to get better. Can't beat the title track.

Agreed hard

his solo stuff shits all over the last 5 PT albums at least
I can probably agree with that (based purely on GFD as I haven't given this a proper listen yet). Although I do have a soft spot for Deadwing, the only post-Stupid Dream PT album I really enjoy and that's mainly because of Arriving Somehwere.

I must be the only one who finds the title track to be the weakest track here (not that it's bad, it's a good song, just not as entertaining as the others in my opinion). Luminol, The Watchmaker, and Holy Drinker are the three main tracks I go for on this one.

Lightbulb Sun is great too.
IA is brilliant, Deadwing is p good, FOABP is p snooze and The Incident is hard zzzzzzz.

I think Steve has written some of his best songs on his solo albums, but I think the Porcupine Tree albums are still equally great as a whole.
Kind of like comparing Frank Zappa's works with the Mothers. Though I think Hot Rats is his greatest accomplishment, his albums with The Mothers still rule.

so do i JT. deadwing is one of my fav PT but it's not even close to GFD. maybe on par with this tho

PT's and Wilson's orchestration is great.
I've just never been able to get into his voice, his music in general oozes emotion instrumentally but his voice feels kinda emotionless and detracts from the music at times.

I wasn't a huge fan of GFD tbh but I found it a lot more interesting than a lot of recent PT albums even if it did drag somewhat.

That's my exact thought, Jamie.

it would've been perfect if it didn't have the messy Raider II

The ideas present in his solo material seem a lot more interesting than on any of the last 5 PT albums that's for sure.

PT's early work just feels more complete and doesn't drag like some of their recent material.

The best parts of this album are Theo Travi's flute/sax sections. That guy is the even greater than Ian Anderson.
