If they could focus on writing more melodic riffs and ditched the chugs for good, they'd be one awesome band
PIII is the worst offender probably, it's just one incessant chugfest fml

this argument is so dumb, literally only the main riff in Absolomb is the djenty one, tons of melodic riffs in that very song, you just have a hate boner towards these guys, if you don't like it, fuck off, these guys blend the djent rhythms and melodic riffs seamlessly

Regarding that song:
This song has a rather interesting story. My girlfriend likes it when I play guitar while she plays COD, and sometimes we do so whilst under the influence of things. When in such a state, I really enjoy just making trippy sounding patches on my Axefx II and jamming on those. Sometimes I jam on something that i am curious to hear recorded just to see what would happen, and that is the story of how the original demo for this song was born. At around 2 minutes originally, it was rather short, and it didn't have much of an arrangement or anything to it really. I sent it to the guys, but only because I like to send them everything I record, even if it isn't necessarily appropriate for Periphery. The guys said they liked it, but I thought that would be the end of that. Only a few days later, however, Spencer sent me a demo of the song with the parts rearranged to accommodate vocals, and that blew everyone away. The demo was a bit on the bland side before, but Spencer managed to turn it into a vocally driven powerhouse, and did an incredible job on hitting every sweet note on the chorus. From that point on we knew we had to make this a full idea, so once again when Mark, Jake and I were on retreat we decided to work on finishing the idea up and making it a complete song. Interestingly enough, I originally demoed a completely different second half to this song which the guys dug but after spending some time with it, I honestly felt it was decent and not great like I wanted it to be. So we scrapped that and went for a completely different feel, and the arrangement that made it onto the album was born. Maybe someday I will post up the alternate demo so you guys can see what the song might have ended up as. The absolute icing on the cake, was that we were able to get John Petrucci to do the solo at the end section of the song while we were on the Dream Theater tour earlier this year. The only instruction that Jake gave him when recording him was to do a little "Erotomania" style ending that would go over the fade at the end of the song, and I absolutely love that little touch. This song is another idea that treads some new ground, and it is a direction that will surely be explored again, if even by accident as it was with this. - Misha

I've been told politely to shut the fuck up as well for hating on things others love around here, but ignoring it is the healthiest way to deal with it, it goes in both ways

It can take time to get used to his voice, but the talent is beyond obvious, i mean, his voice goes up like an angel and down like a wounded ox

Spencer certainly has vocal talent, but his vocal timbre can be very grating on the high cleans
Listening through the discography makes it pretty clear that he's constantly improving. The vocal gap between this and P1 is pretty huge as it is
