And to clarify FromDaHood...
http://www.popradiotop20.com/Modern-Rock/GreenDay.htm
The singles from Uno Dos and Tre flopped. Oh Love was the band's first lead single to not hit #1 since "Hitchin a Ride", and "Let Yourself Go" and "X Kid" (two of the best songs of the trilogy) completely bombed on the charts.

And we go on and on about how Nimrod and Warning were unsuccessful, but the charts prove otherwise

Hybrid Theory which came out the same year as Warning went diamond. Take Off Your Pants and Jacket moved 350k in its first week the year after. Warning was not a successful release

Releasing a snoozer as a lead single didn't help. Had they pushed Let Yourself Go first, it would have hit #1 instantly like Know Your Enemy.

I'm not saying KYE is good, but it's a lot faster and uptempo than Oh Love, and hit #1 in its second
week after debuting at #8

Yeah Let Yourself Go is one of the few modern Green Day songs I like. The live version is pretty boss.
And as for Basket Case being successful, I never implied that it wasn't. I was more referring to the sonic change in the band from that era of music to the one that produced this album. This all just sounds way more radio-friendly. There's no fire.

Well you said "it's too rough for radio" you can see where I'd be confused

And American Idiot is definitely more guitar driven and louder than Basket Case js
