Awful to me seems a bit extreme.
It's not even bad, it's just really uninspired to me. I feel that way about most Steven Wilson's material though.

Maybe my observation is going a bit too far, but it seems to me that Jamie doesn't like much progressive rock that has a basis in either soft rock or alternative rock/metal (I'd say FOABP is part of the latter). Seems more like a traditionalist

Steven Wilson's solo material easily rivals PT, especially Raven and Grace for Drowning

I agree Talons. Raven even beats a fair amount of PT albums in my opinion.

I'd rather listen to Wilson's influences as opposed to his brand of regurgitation.
He's definitely talented, but his solo material doesn't bring anything new to the table. That's what Prog is about: pushing the bar. All that Wilson does to me is create homages to classic Prog.
That's fine and not easy to pull off, but it's nothing new or progressive.

@beef: This is easily the most naturally "progressive" thing Wilson has ever been a part of. Given everything you've just said I'm surprised you don't like this, I mean in terms of creativity and uniqueness this is by far the most inspired album he's put out.

The reason I don't like FOABP stems pretty much purely from the fact that I find the song writing to be atrocious (especially the lyrics) and the fact that musically it offers up nothing of interest all to me and on top of that it all seems so clinical and void of emotion.

So really your observation (although partly true) has no real relevance to my dislike for FOABP and much of PT's other material.

If I rated albums based on lyrics like you then no DT album would be above a 2 lol

Six degrees and Metropolis part 2 have great lyrics. Besides, surely it's the music that makes the music? lyrics are cool if they're good but no one listens to something like death metal or opeth for the lyrics

I don't rate on albums based on lyrics unless they're (one of) the main focal point(s) (Dylan, Cohen, Tull etc.) or unless they're extremely bad and delivered in such a way that they are infinitely off-putting to me (Porcupine Tree). I mean if there's nothing of interest musically behind the lyrics how can I not rate based on them.

Although some of the lyrics on FOABP are pretty cringeworthy. it's not as emotionless as you seem to make it out to be JT, especially on a song like Sentimental where the atmosphere is just absolutely gorgeous on that.

Idk. I'll eventually give it another go.
I really enjoy a couple of PT's earlier albums. There are a few moments on the later albums that I enjoy also like Ariving Somewhere but Not Here and Blind House.

Something about Wilson's music just seems so clinical to me that I can't connect with it emotionally at all. Except parts of this because the atmosphere and ambience is so strong.

last third of the title track for the Incident is perfect, especially I Drive The Hearse.

Burn the prada trainers...

Yeah, but they're not atrociously bad at least

JT I respect your opinion and sort of understand even though I disagree completely. However some of PT's best songs like Anesthetize and Arriving Somewhere, or the T/Ts on FOABP and DW seem to follow really similar song structures which annoys me slightly

Agreed. Mid to late-era Porcupine Tree is much more based around song writing which is why the terrible lyrics are a problem.

The only problem I have is that it just feels like Steven Wilson didn't even try with writing some decent lyrics
