Ah, I found a stream where the screams sound better...

@Cutman I listened to the last song again all through, and I actually really liked the beginning, the bridge, the screams 'if you're the sun I'm a BLACK HOLE!' - they worked well. I was digging it all... until suddenly the song changed. That's what I thought, before realizing 'this is the LAST song'. (I did check the stream just in case.)

Anyway, after the 3:10 mark or so I was pretty lost. There was very little connection between what came before and the 'cool' bass line and upbeat pop-punk thing that happened after. So I ended up questioning how real those emotions I'd been following in the beginning were, after the song just lifted out of them like that. When the atmospheric stuff came in after, it was nice, but the placement felt forced, and I had no idea what I was supposed to be reflecting on. And that's how the rest of the song felt to me. The fade out effect at the end was nice.

I think it was too ambitious of a song. If you go through darkness, and then lift yourself out of it, devote a song to each part. If you're going through it all in one song at least explain the journey you're taking us on through clear(er) lyrics or more subtle instrumental changes to guide us. If you're overcoming your anger and depression that's great - but this skips right over any possible 'overcoming' stage, so... If the song had been split in two, or the middle part cut out and replaced with a different transition, I think the result would have been much better.

Do you like it because you do understand or enjoy those transitions? Everyone does get something different out of the same song, but I just can't see which emotional chord this one could strike.

1. Look Alive, Sunshine

2. Na Na Na

3. Bulletproof Heart

4. The Only Hope for Me is You

5. Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them back

6. Sing (i don't really like this song but apparently others did)

"Peace Out" is awesome. Whatever, man.

@mastille

Ah, I feel that transition was too sudden, too. I just asked because it had more manic energy.

Then again, I defend a song's ability to go from dark to light. Seven minutes is long enough to do it, really. Again, though, I listen to a lot of genres that do stuff like that, so I feel differently about switching from minor to major scales (and any other scales). For instance, I dunno that'd I'd call what it turned into upbeat.

Sometimes I like it when I'm not sure what I'm feeling. Because to me, that's how life feels. We rarely feel just one thing at once. Sometimes a song with sad lyrics, but some major sections, well, that's just how life feels.

But no arguments, I think the song, at that one point, kinda made a big mistake. I think the rest flowed well. But, again, I'm Mr. Loves-Prog-Rock-And-Musicals-And-Stuff.
