it's mostly just weakerthans lyrics on paper (they're in prose though) but there's a couple of never-before-seen pieces that are cool. i dunno it's just when you're jamming the weakerthans you're not 100% focused on john's lyrics even though they're meritorious on their own so you can really appreciate them when they're in a book like that.

I'll have to grab myself a copy of it, probably my favourite lyricist. Cheers

Span this again today and out of no where came all of these interpretations of lines that I had yet to find a meaning to. There's something about this album which gives me new experiences on every listen.

John K. Samson > other lyricists. Samson probably even takes the cake from mewithoutYou's Aaron Weiss. He is THAT incredible.

"Benediction" has been my jam lately
So you don't get to be a saint
Martyrs never last this long
I guess I'll never be the one
To defeat desire in song
Here's a marker, here's my naked skin: our Exhibit A
Put a small X where I lost my way

Quote from article:
'Strangely, this album is technically more like a Weakerthans record than my first solo album. It is co-produced by Jason Tait, The Weakerthans drummer, along with my partner, Christine Fellows, and also features Greg Smith, The Weakerthans bass player, and much of it was recorded by Weakerthans sound tech Cam Loeppky. But in other ways it feels very different. It is a bit of a sprawler at 15 songs, which is unusual for me, and is mostly acoustic and spare, and was recorded in home studios over a really long Winnipeg winter.'
Also, The last song is called Virtute at Rest I can't deal with this

Samson is by far my favorite lyricist of all time and Virtute Explains Her Departure tears me up every time, new solo album will be a ride

I remember the first time I listened to this album I spent a good few minutes on each song trying to crack the meaning behind each metaphor and line, only to give up. I then became lazy and scrolled down on the lyrics page to see someone say something along the lines of "Over time the meaning behind each song on the album will become understandable, with each listen you begin to understand more from each song"
Which is so true. It's such a good feeling when Samson's lyrics hit you, bumped this album from one of my least listened to 4.5's to perhaps my joint favourite album of all time.

Mother, mother may I cry
Father will you teach me how to die the right way someday
I don't want a second chance to turn my stuttering reluctance into romance
