Ok I think I figured it out. Since Vertebrae was the first I heard of these guys and it was recently, I went into this thinking that their main style was the kind of melodic first, black metal second that was displayed on Vertebrae. Hawks saying "they compliment each other" made me realize that this album is black metal first, melodic clean stuff second. Now I realize just how well done the traditional sections are on this, and having both albums together really makes for an awesome heavy/melodic dynamic. Bumped to 4, album is great, there is my nub pretentious rant.

[EDIT] Plus it has Giants and Lightning, which more than make up for the lack of melodies like those on Vertebrae.

Yeah I suppose this is almost like a counterpoint to Vertebrae. They always were black metal, they just had been venturing further into the progressive realm from Monumension onward. This is their most "metal" album since Below the Lights I want to say.

Isa is still towards the bottom of the list for me as far as Enslaved album. I really like it, just not their best.

How can you look at Isa's puppy eyes and tell it it's not the best ever? You monster!

Plus, Bounded By Allegiance and Neogenesis man!

Neogenesis is definitely amazing, I'll give you that. Isa does have some great songs and also some pretty average songs. Still a really good album overall.

Giants is probably my song of the year, unless agalloch or alterbridge beats it. Agalloch has a good chance I think.
