"I could donate a blank canvas to an art gallery and expect to make money off of it, but would I? no. that's essentially what John Cage did."
oh yeah john took aaaaall the money that greedy bastard
|
| |
actually its not wrong. its a dictionary defintion. you can't argue it
|
| |
shut up throwaway the dictionary writers are the ultimate experts on everything, music included.
john cage might have been an experienced composer and an inventor of prepared instruments but did he write a dictionary?

Kind of difficult for me too to call 4'33'' music. How can something that deliberately refuses to create any sound of any kind at all be music? Isn't that like saying, a guy sitting in front of a canvas doing nothing and letting people's minds create the pictures is actual painting? Doesn't that contradict even the broadest definitions of those art forms?

is anything even music tho you feel me?
|
| |
the idea beyond the 4:33 composition grants the tag of music even by the dictionary definition. if you think the piece is just silence you don't understand what he was trying to do.
|
| |
i mean that without sounding pretentious or snobbish because you aught to read up about it before judging it

And krazykris begins to realize what the entire point of 4'33 is by the same logic he thought would discredit it.
|
| |
so me sitting in my room by myself is music? bullshit. because that's what cage did
|
| |
no cage traveled the world searching for perfect silence, when he found out that you cannot ever have perfect silence, he had the idea for 4:33. it was actually in an an-echoic chamber that he had the epiphany

If I fart in rhythm it is music.
If I sit in a room and do nothing I am not making music.
Conversation over.

Well, maybe not the entire point, but he surely knew what the reaction would be to a certain extent
|
| |
the idea of never having perfect silence inspired him to live life with the thought process that anything that is not silence could be interpreted to be music. thus the idea of letting people sit and absorb the sounds around them as the length of the average song. trying to open people up to the concept that music does not have to have a definition.

uploading my music right now
|

seriously though why all the debate, does it really matter if it's music or not? what, can you not appreciate anything that you can't easily put a "music" label on?

@deathschool I wasn't discrediting it. How is questioning it being music discrediting it? I'm not saying it's not art, not at all. All I'm saying is that it doesn't fit into any definition of that very art form for me.
Of course I know that that's the whole point of it, challenging the definition of music.

Yeah it doesn't really matter if it is music or not. I still dislike it (but it is fine if you do, I guess)
