WATR suffers from filler, imo. “Swimming the Channel...” and “I Wanna Be A Sex Symbol...” are good tracks in their own right, but they seriously don’t compare to the rest of the album. Also, the placement of the latter song is mind-boggling. It should transition from “Frequency Ass Bandit” to “Man the Ramparts”. Why is the arguably weakest track placed in between them?
Moreover, I feel “Japam”, “Framce”, and “Vietnam” are perfect representations of Botch’s more refined sound and maturity. They’re more focused songs and lack any of the “eh” moments that permeate some of the better tracks in WATR. That’s without even getting into the one-two punch that is Afghamistam/Micaragua.
Honestly, if this was a full LP and they maintained this level of quality throughout five more tracks or so, I don’t think there would be any doubt as to its superiority.
I wil say this, though: The ending of “Man the Ramparts” is the single best Botch moment ever.
