This is one of the most downright puzzling albums I've ever heard. I think I love it, but it's so weird that I can't even really gauge how I feel about it.

This is like
Classic/Prog rock channeled through a moderately old school bm lens and I'm both confused and engaged by it
So far it slaps

Anybody who is on the fence about checking this band out or simply finds this a little unpleasant, know that the last album Shiki has a beefier metal sound that may work as an excellent entry point

Essential listening if you like your music weird. Prob a 5 for me these days.

It really isn’t. It’s good but it’s mad overrated and they have way better. The last album they did clears this easily

... it doesn't?
there's still time but currently not enjoying Shiki all that much
then again I haven't revisited this is a good while. Quite frankly a bizarre menagerie of sounds old and new, yet somehow pulled off remarkably well, from memory. Shiki is almost restrained in comparison and kinda... dull?

Shiki is overall a lot better than this yes, misses its goofball peaks (and tries to make up for this too late) but otherwise much tighter shit, riffs for days and the morbid middle age concept carries well

I love this one but Hangman's Hymn is their best. I still gotta jam Shiki actually.

I also felt lukewarm about Shiki, too bad it's probably the one they'll be focusing on when I'll see them in August. Oh well
