While Death is a super important band, Suffocation has had more impact on the sound overall imo

Oh, I thought Death was wildly more influential on the genre.

Either way I'm both a Suffo and Death fanboy

Suffocation's influence helped spawn BDM, deathcore and slam as well as their massive influence on tech death. Regardless how you feel about those genres, so many bands have taken inspiration from them and they've helped progress the sonics further

Obviously Suffocation has the benefit of BDM being way more popular than Prog Death, moreso after the inception of Deathcore, so of course the number of bands taking inspiration from Suffo is way higher, but Death's influence can be seen in a wider array of metal sub-genres, not just death metal. Chuck is a freaking legend.

deaths 80s albums had more of an impact on death metal worldwide than their 90s albums, even if i do prefer the 90s stuff. suffocation definitely added the hardcore/grind elements that'd bleed into bdm/deathcore/etc, i'm also comfortable saying liege of inveracity has probably the first 'slam.' soo in terms of the underground scene of the bedroom dm era : suffos influence is easier to pinpoint, buuut you can find nods to scream bloody gore/lep in pretty much any seminal death metal album from any scene whether it be cali/ny/sweden/uk/etc, suffos influence is a bit more specific

Have zero fucking idea how someone could think this lol. Suffocation have had more of a impact on brutal death metal but that's about it. Death literally has a hand in every sub genre of dm. Thrash, prog etc etc. easily the single most influential dm band there is without question. Suffocation possibly wouldn't even existed without death. The damn genre itself is named after the band I mean I that should tell you everything

I’m pretty sure the most likely origin is the genre was named after the Possessed song “Death Metal”

If it was 2004, I would agree more about Death but objectively Suffocation has had more influence on modern DM. Both are in my top 5 DM bands ever. I do agree that Death's influence likely transcends DM

death may have been influential on the early death metal movement but you are being chronically online boomers if you think most metalheads under 25 are listening to death in 2024. suffocation is 100% the more influential of the two if you don’t let your metal archives myopia take over.

just throwing this out there, literally every metalhead I've met in the last 10 years still listens to Death or is reasonably familiar with them. Suffocation not as much

Same. Death are way more known in the metal scene as a whole.

Spotify numbers may be a good indicator idk:

Suffocation: 114.000 monthly views

Death: 699.000 monthly views

both answers can be right i feel, death was influential in the late 80s/90s by essentially spawning the death metal genre and re-inventing it (not to mention perhaps the finest technical death metal record ever with human) and suffocation influential in the 2000s-present because of their invention of slam and brutal death metal
