Also old news but this is most definitely progressive rock

It's weirder and more experimental and more esoteric than most prog but still prog

I'd disagree with that. It can resemble prog at times but only vaguely (as a secondary genre), similar to how Station to Station and This Heat are krautrock. Where's the pathos, constant rhythm shifts, flashy solos, fantasy themes etc. ?

It has always puzzled me why krautrock is usually considered a subgenre of prog as many krautrock bands have little to do with prog (like Can) and some are not prog at all (like Neu! or Cluster)

Well a lot of prog doesn't feature fantasy themes (particularly prog that came after the 70s/80s), and there are a number of guitar solos here, they're just understated rather than flashy

At their core this and all those albums are still rock albums that draw ideas from jazz, improvisation, classical music and all sorts of other influences and advance (ie progress) the rock genre by experimenting with structure and playing, that is (to me) the essence of prog. This and all those Krautrock bands are considered prog because they are rock bands that don't adhere to the standard rock narrative and draw more those genres I just mentioned than something like the blues or folk, which is a common trait with "standard" prog bands. And whereas most famous prog bands would draw their influences from more standard leanings of Jazz or Classical music, Krautrock (And Avant-Prog, another big prog sub-genera) happened to draw from the avant-garde of those genres more, which inherently made their music more esoteric and less pop-sensible, so it's a no-brainer that they'd sound very different.

The problem with that definition is that it's far too broad. Virtually every somewhat innovative rock album ever is prog according to it.

"Krautrock in it of itself is considered a progressive rock sub-genera"

That's my problem.

yeah prog isnt just experimental rock. There are so many experimental rock bands that have absolutely nothing to do with prog. The Velvet Underground, Chrome etc

I don't think this is prog rock either. Too avant-garde/experimental. Of course music is on a grey-scale so there's certainly some prog as well as psych, etc.

I like using the rulebook analogy. Prog rock is like taking the rulebooks of certain genres and reassembling the pages in different order. Avant-garde/experimental rock is like having read some rulebooks, tearing them to pieces, and then writing your own rules.

I don't know if I can agree with that since experimental rock and prog rock cross over frequently

I sort of worded it badly there, what I meant when I was talking about the "essence" of prog was how it experimented with the playing and structure of rock within the context of classical music, jazz music etc - Not just rock music that's unlike other rock music. All prog music (or hell at least prog music that I know of) takes influences from those genres, but as I said the more experimental branches (Krautrock and avant-prog) take cues from the weirder side of them

when people argue that a lot of 'experimental' music is 'prog,' it comes from the idea of progressive music as a forward thinking idea as opposed to an already solidified genre
in that way it makes sense to describe a group like this as progressive, but in any case they are not 'progressive rock'
