Some of their material could basically be called "Baby's first IDM" just because it's pretty easy going and helped define what the genre (of sorts) is supposed to be about, which I'm assuming is what people mean when they say that but they definitely evolved into something more intimidating and interesting, Afx did too though not to the same extreme

if anything, by me bringing that baby thing up was to appreciate the scope and prowess of AE that can't be said for nearly any other musical entity, i.e. as a beginning/end of IDM

edit: plus I think anything "baby's first w/e" gets slapped on when it's what gets recommended the most above other acts. AFX, BoC, and AE are usually the main 3. you don't see u-ziq, Amon Tobin, Clark, Squarepusher, Plaid, and Monolake get rec'd as often.

yeah based on the three albums I've heard they seem to have a wider range of sounds than aphex twin and boc

Aphex's music is pretty diverse too tbh but I agree that these guys are even more so

Honestly I'd probably drop the baby's first tag on squarepusher or plaid. As far as sonic diversity goes, æ > afx > boc

Which is incidentally how I'd rank the three groups

Damn. I'd say keep listening cause there's a ton to unpack here, but if you ain't feeling it that much it's understandable with these guys since their music's more alien than emotive. Though this album is probably their most accessible. I just can't enough of the intricate layers of sound on here.

Yeah I think this could grow on me, cuz there were parts that genuinely blew me away with the layering and feel.

Definitely a grower. Most of this isn't really visceral or immediate, but it's super rewarding if you can get into what they're doing.
