this and Epica as a whole = still the best thing that power metal did to the world

Agreed. Plus One Cold Winter's Night to show us part of their best era in live form.

Tommy is brilliant, studio and live alike (seen them about two weeks ago). Best replacement they could have found.

Yeah One Cold Winter's Night's also one of my favorite live albums. Karma is also them at their prime. Epica+Black Halo put together can't be bettered though. Listening to them back to back, preferably with Epilogue as a closer ... just magical.

Also, agreed about Tommy. There's no way any other singer could have done a better job as a replacement.

The Fourth Legacy is pretty underrated too. It's very close to the three best albums for me.

It's definitely a good album, but it's more typical for its genre compared to literally everything they did afterwards. That's why I don't return to it that often. But it's got Silent Godess and Glory and stuff, so nothing against it at all.

Oh yeah, definitely their "most power metal" with Roy Khan, but even so, much better executed than a lot of their peers.

Yes definitely and without question.

I think Poetry for the Poisoned is their most under-appreciated. When it was released, people were criticizing its lack of grandiose power metal chrouses. I still wonder why they were expecting stuff like that, I mean, they've always been about more than that.

It's still not one of their best but it's wrongly overlooked.

Poetry ended up being my 5th favourite (after the 4 obvious ones from this convo). I enjoy its darker, slower sound, but it makes sense why the typical Kamelot/power metal fan wouldn't dig that too much.

Well, they're definitely a very chorus driven band and they're clearly experts at that, especially on the Tommy records, but that doesn't say they can't do other styles properly as well.

'still the best thing that power metal did to the world'

I think Blind Guardian will have something to say about that

No, I'm sorry, Blind Guardian are among my 10 favorite bands of all time, I LOVE them with a passion and Imaginations and Nightfall both belong to my favorite albums, but as a piece of art, the Epica saga is even more rewarding imo. BG come closest though, safe for maybe Art of Life, if you wanna count that as power metal

Iced Earth, Symphony X and Blind Guardian would be the closest, I guess.

I wouldn't call Art of Life power metal; marvelous track either way.
