you're assuming that i was ever invested in viewing that quote for its credibility and not its silliness - doesn't make any difference to me whether you're huffing your own farts or christgau's (though it would have been a cogent pairing)

the point is that chinstroking over whether 13 songs is any less enduring a statement because both its halves already existed in other forms is as arbitrary and shortsighted as quibbling over Low's stylistic cutoff. Fugazi had 2 great eps packed with career-defining tracks *and/or* a classic compilation before that precious spurious-debut dropped? those start-of-career goalposts can't take much more strain

It is in fact not at all arbitrary and that’s the point that somehow keeps slipping through your fingers but keep trying ! And don’t forget that I rescinded the “career started” comment and acknowledged that I (incorrectly, or short-sightedly, as you might say) was using it as a substitute for “this band’s first LP”. Lastly nowhere in my rambling did I insinuate that 13 SONGS is subpar or didn’t have career-defining tracks in it or whatever but it is also by definition not Fugazi’s first LP. I don’t make the rules I just follow them and I promise there are sources more credible than myself that you can use to confirm this very fact.

well as everyone and their mum knows, LP (Long Player) is a vinyl term used indiscriminately with whether a release is a compilation or not, and the only reason that Repeater is technically the first Fugazi LP where 13 Songs is not is that (surprisingly) 13 Songs was never released on any format other than CD or cassette

which is about as arbitrary a distinction as I could possibly imagine given that we are talking about neither of our record collections

gonna save you the legwork and cough up an unambiguous version of your take, which would read the best releases in both the Fugazi and Unwound discogs are the first non-demo, LP's worth of original material that they released commercially within a year of recording, and also their final original full-length

which may not be arbitrary - it is your opinion! - but the number of hoops it has to jump through to force debut full-length status on both Repeater and Fake Train (which is a can of worms better left unopened lmao) says it all. in the various abridged forms you've been heelturning between, it's a misrepresentative read on both band's timelines and careers. just say you like that their rym album stack starts and ends on a high and leave it there

"in what ways is it not?"

13 Songs is an iconic comp of two individually iconic EPs that Fugazi dropped before their 1990 debut-if-you-try-very-hard-to-make-it-one Repeater lol. it slaps and is easily their most straightforward punk joint go jam it!

"literally what I've been trying to say the entire time"

you committed the unforgivable sin of trying to look succinct, switched-on and sexy for repeat-posting a cripplingly unwieldy take and as a humble police office all I can do at this point is pass the whole thing over for trial

release the hounds or whatever lfg
