I like nightside a lot but the lack of kick drum in the mix bothers me. Metal without a solid kick feels a little weak

Nightside has the best atmosphere ever on any album.

Even with atmospheric bm, I still like to hear kick

I hate that I'm so liberally giving this and Nightside Eclipse a 5 but holy shit both of these just rule. Should've honed in on these 4 years ago when Dissection was also new to me

the term "symphonic" is a turn off for me so that explains my hesitation but it's not overdone like Dimmu Borgir

I mean I still like Dimmu but Emperor just completely owns this style. I'm still unable to figure out why it doesn't at all matter that the keys are so prominent yet the music stays totally within bm boundaries. Especially on Nightside

I would think that the synth/keys are not the focus in Emperor. They're setting the tone and accompanying the guitars and drums harmoniously while Dimmu really puts it at the forefront in some of their work. They make it so you have to love it or you'll hate it lol.

Yeah that might be it. Those riffs, drums and screams are at the centre of their sound, and boy are they addicting!

Ignored Pika after saying Moonsorrow was best BM. ;]

And eh. Metal has been lacking good composition lately so coming back to this has been nice. And don't say Dawn to Fear.
