@ShadowsFallen: How can you say that Lust is the worst song Arsis has ever done? I love the chorus, and that melodic sort of breakdown section at 2:17 is so awesome because Jim's vocals are so brutal yet the guitar is so melodic. I haven't had the chance to buy the album yet, but I really liked Lust more than "Oh the Humanity," which was a little too thrasy to me. I have high hopes. for this album after ACOG and ADFD.

A little off topic, but has anyone seen these guys in concert? They rocked both times I've seen them and after talking to James, I think he's one of the coolest guys ever. Apparently at some point in his life he wanted to be a hairdresser but instead came back to music. Righteous.

It's because of all of those horribly harmonized moments, like he's trying to layer with minor seconds. Then I also hate that it's primarily a wank fest with random sweeps going every few seconds. It has some great moments but I skip it regularly, mostly because I listened the hell out of it when it was first released.

I've never seen them live but I'd love to. Some friends of mine saw them with Necrophagist and said Arsis completely stole the show.

I find myself heading down the same path...

Probably because the other band on that tour was Neuraxis, and they aren't good.

They also said Necrophagist was a surprisingly boring live band. I never would've guessed (not sarcasm).

Eep! Technicality over melody? =( Still reserving thoughts till i listen to it, but I don't like the sound of that. What I love about Arsis is how they fuse the two together without one overpowering the other.

Grrr for my review not being the default.

This review is still really good, but mine was sent in days before this one.

After getting ADFD, i can safely say i like that more. This album has alot more wank, and well, less melody.

At the mo, I'm still digesting this album but I'm not sure I'm going to like it as much as the others in the long run. It's definetly decent, I think they went overboard in some parts though and sacrificed melody for technicality, as has been mentioned a few times now.

I don't think they necessarily sacrificed melody for technicality, I just think the album is thrashier than than their other stuff. I tend to like more melodic stuff, but it still rocks pretty hard. The last half of the CD seems to have some more melodic stuff on it.

Hopefully after a few more listens I'll have a good idea what to rate this and possibly review it.

I have to say, after listening to this album I was plesantly shocked. Lots of melody, lots of technicality, and the vocals are understandable (which is about the most you can expect from death I suppose). Really kicking shit though.

I am dissapointed. As i posted in the Arsis thread a while back when they released the first track, they have gone on to be a tech death band.

/snore

id give this a 3.

Tech death or not, I still think this album is something kickarse. This has actually inspired me to check out more from the genre. Any suggestions?

Ive already checked out some melodeath like Kalmah and Bodom, which I liked, and some brutal death like Cryptopsy and Behemoth, which I didnt like.

I hear a lot of disaproval over James' new way of harmonizing. Personally, I got sick of octaves, thirds, and fifths. The new fourths or seconds (or whatever the hell they are) are a good innovation for metal, I think. As for technicality over melody? No way. They're more...um...melodically technical. Or technically melodic. Whatever.

They're more technical, that's for sure. And people think that they've lost their melody because their riffs have gotten to me more dissonant than they have on past albums. While this is true, I think it's cool, and the album still has plenty of melody to serve its purpose.

The Cold Resistance = melodic greatness

The into to The Marriage Bed is pretty melodic and technical too.

Also, the Depche Mode cover is awesome (The Things You Said).

Why would it upset you that they are gaining more fans? I had never heard these guys till I saw them live in my hometown and I thought they were amazing, as well did a lot of people I'm sure. I hope they get bigger than they are now cause they have so much talent.

People aren't upset that they're gaining popularity, they're upset because it's making Arsis criminally overrated.
