She has great singing ability, I don't like the sound of her voice though
I've heard of After Forever. Not got huge amounts of their stuff though.
"Monolith of Doubt" is usually the first track I recommend to people, but the beforementioned "Pledge of Allegiance" has some of the most beautiful vocal sections I've ever heard in it.

Nightwish is a required taste...just about my favorite band...right now
|
| |
I heart this band.
|
| |
It comforts my heart that Nightwish gets some attention in the US.. :chug:
I think Nightwish is a great band, and I love the way Tarja and Marco sound together..
Adding Marco in the band was pure genious.. ;)
Check out other european bands like Tristania, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Lunatica, Ambeon, Ayreon and Theatre of Tragedy..
Google, or ask for links..

european music is the way to go...norweigans seem to produce very good music (nightwish is finnish i believe) but i only listen to european music
THANK GOD FOR EUROPEAN MUSIC(or satan whoever you prefer)
|
| |
I thank our ancestors, for breeding this noble bunch of musicians.. ;)
And you have correct information about Nightwish coming from Finland..
Other great finnish bands: Moonsorrow, Stratovarius and Velcra (sounds a little like Guano Apes)

I agree 100%. When I saw them in Chicago, Tarja whispered "I love you all" into the microphone at the end of the set; it was very touching. Their influence here in the states seems to be spreading rather quickly, and they've earned every bit of it. Oh, and Marco was freaking awesome! His stage presence is superb, very animated and fun guy, plus a hell of a bassist+vocalist. Definetly a great addition to the band...Sami was a good bassplayer, but Marco contributes so much to the band! (he also does alot of the classical and acoustic guitar parts)
I'd like to add the Gathering, After Forever, and Paradise Lost to that list, though. And, for a different sound, check out England's Mostly Autumn.
 Sorry, gotta plug my favorite European bands.
Edit: and you can't mention Finland without talking about Children of Bodom!
|
| |
Sure I left out a lot of bands..
If I should mention all great european bands, I'd sit here typing for days.. :D
But I can hit you with some more Norwegian bands..
Leave's eyes(porject of Liv Kristine Espenes, former female vocalist of Theatre Of Tragedy), Sirenia, The 3rd and the mortal, The sins of thy beloved, Imperia, Trail Of Tears and Jörn Lande..
From Sweden I need to mention In Flames and Draconian as two of my favourites..

*glances at your avatar* Dream Theater are from the US+Canada, man.

Just got this from the good-ol' Amazon.com the other day. I love the crap out of it. It must be so sick to be in a band like that. It makes me want to really make a zillion operatic prog-metal songs. And have a female vocalist.
Anybody else think it's really crazy that the keyboardist writes all the music?
P.S. Also got "Comalies" by Lacuna Coil. It's pretty awesome too. I'm very interested in their prog-metal pasts now, so what are your recommendations for past albums that have strong song-writing like this, but which also are super complex stuff?
My girlfriend doesn't like Tarja's voice, either. It's "too trained", apparently.
Ugh, that's what my roommate says. Personally, I prefer Christina of LC to Tarja of NW, but MY girlfriend likes Tarja better precisely because of the operatic vocals.
|
| |
Get Symphony X - The Odyssey or any Rhapsody CD, preferably Symphony of Enchanted Lands
|
| |
I warmly recommend Draconian's album Where lovers mourn, from 2003..
Very moody, with a touch of goth.. Both male and female vocals..
Great band from Sweden.. ;)
As past Nightwish albums go, you simply can't go wrong with Wishmaster.
Thanks!!
|

Yeah, Wishmaster's ace.

Christina can sound a little thin at times, Tarja's voice is alot fuller and more emotional IMO. Lacuna's a decent band, though....I prefer their older stuff (In a Reverie, Half Life).
Your girlfriend > your roommate.

I had to register to congratulate Det_Nosnip for that AWESOME review...I wish I could find stuff like that for the other albums...I simply love Nightwish, it's my favorite band..
|

Iai did Century Child, and one of us will probably get around to doing the rest soon enough if someone else doesn't grab 'em.
