The concept of this album seems to have been well thought out by Bruce Dickinson, and even if this isn't necessarily his best solo effort, I'd say it's definitely his most ambitious. Having now listened to the album a few times I think it would be fitting to watch the film that takes the same name (featuring Dickinson in a cameo role of course). As for the music, I believe it to be quite aggressive and groove-laden for the most part, with very little mellow or melodic parts to be found. The two longer tracks-That is 'Book of Thel' and 'The Alchemist'-both impress by being very well structured and having a nice progression, but other highlights for me would be 'The Tower' (which I personally think is one of Dickinson's heaviest songs) and 'Gates of Uriyen', which features an excellent solo courtesy of Adrian Smith.

This is seriously a fantastic traditional metal offering during a time when plenty of big name bands of the same genre were struggling to reach this high.

Agreed and that's an additional reason for why this is so awesome.

Surprised there's so few pages. This is one of the better metal albums of the 90's if you ask me. There's no weak spots to be found, just incredibly consistent with strokes of genius to be found on here. The Tower, King in Crimson.. etc What a great album.

Absolutely. Some moments are pure brilliance. And it was definitely needed during a time where classic metal wasn't enjoying its best period.
