I will say that one big improvement over the years is Johan Hegg's vocals. Great enunciation and perfect mix of rasp and growl. The chants/spoken stuff is pretty good too because he uses the same register and "stays in character".

I remember an interview like 15 years ago where they said that there are only so many lyrical points to make given the limited source material and here they are still finding new ways to present the same ideas lol.

Yea I don't think it would kill them to branch out of the Viking/Norse Mythology shtick completely but at this point I guess they are committed. That said, I enjoyed this for what it is.

I think the issue is that they're committed to the badass warrior aesthetic almost exclusively. I understand why, since they're drawing from Manowar and fantasy themed 80s metal. But you have songs like Across the Rainbow Bridge or Fate of Norns which are about grief and have a bit more emotional depth to them, you know?

Man I really need to do a discog run on these guys eventually. Or at least finish off their classic era and then cherrypick their newer ones. Will probably give this a spin this week! Seems promising.

A shame that the new sigh got like zero discussion compared to this
|

Probably because new Sigh was terrible?
|

Definitely was not, but even if it was, it's undoubtedly better than anything this band has put out in at least 15 years
