There will always be some guy (Jim) who calls a band a gimmick when they consistently use a setup beyond the bog standard vocal/guitars/bass/drums. I don't see it that way, I think some diversity is incredible, if done tastefully.

Aren't there like only three rock/metal bands with throat singing anyway? My issue is adding guitar and bass kind of muddies the sound and it's usually basic riffs from them anyway so it's actively taking away from the superior folk stuff.

Yeah, the rock instrumentation isn't very interesting on its own. I think it adds a fun flair to the sound though and has some interesting dynamics with the folk side (not on this album, but the first thing that comes to mind is the instrumental part after the second chorus in Shihi Hutu).
This is less homogenous than the previous album, which, surprisingly, is a disadvantage since it makes me view this less as a complete experience and more as a collection of songs. Rumble of Thunder might not have many standout tracks, but taking it as a whole is very rewarding. Also, the Nothing More feature is ass.

Hmm, I've never listened straight through Gereg since i found it boring aside from a few standout tracks. I basically forgot about this band until this album dropped, seems I should go back to Rolling Thunder

Checked out Altan Urag. Yea sure it's probably more authentic and traditional, but it bored me to tears. Type of stuff that would play in some dusty museum exhibition.

Like I believe they did the folk rock thing first but iirc only Made in Altan Urag and Blood are folk rock? Haven't checked out too much outside of those (debut is folk only), but it looked like I wasn't getting what I wanted from them.
