not sure why she wants to go back to the late-80's so bad when she sounds so much better modern. 'honeybee,' 'my way,' and 'expectations' are good

@thatdeftkid - Hey, at least you have great highlights choices! I've had Expectations on a loop all day.

it's funkyyy
it's not even an "awful" album by any means, she just doesn't differentiate herself from t.swift

I came into this album very much hoping for as many songs like Drop Dead as possible, but was instead surprised to find that almost all my favorites here are ballads.

I see where you're coming from, but more so in the sense that I wasn't expecting to resonate with the ballads as much as I did on this album. I can't really think of an example from either of her first two albums where I would've called a ballad one of my favorites.
'Begged' might be my favorite of them, but 'Cigarette Smoke' is pretty powerful too.

Begged and Cigarette Smoke are her best two ballads, straightaway. Honeybee and Less are also outstanding, and the latter of those two might be her most heartbreaking.
That wasn't a dig at the upbeat pop songs here by the way, it's just that the ballads are on another level.

Having 'Less' be the song that precedes 'Expectations' is such a bold choice but I love it.

Oh yeah, if 'What's Wrong With Me' counts as a ballad then I might have to say that's my favorite of them actually.

I mean to be fair this is her most Taylor Swift album yet
And by that I mean old 1989-Reputation styled Taylor, not the soulless stuff she puts out now
This has a very real chance of becoming my pop AOTY, don't think I've resonated this strongly and quickly with a mainstream record since Melodrama. In fact in some ways this reminds me of that album.

I almost name dropped Melodrama in this review! Decided to cut it from the last paragraph because I wanted to remain on topic. But I for sure see the comparison.

I was led to believe this doesn't sound a lot like Taylor Swift but IDK MAN. I'm only on the first track, and she immediately has that Taylor Swift cadence. If I didn't know who I was listening to and someone asked me to guess, Taylor would 100% be my first answer lol. It's a solid enough track, comfortably better than any TS I've heard in the last... shit idk, maybe decade or more (low bar tbf), but it seems an obvious comparison point to me.

There are most certainly Swiftisms abound. I pretty much agree with the assessment that this sounds like her but better, and there are enough vocal moments here that Swift couldn't pull off IMO (Begged, Honeybee, Less). As I mentioned above this also shares a lot of structural and thematic qualities with Melodrama (the highs and lows of love, intense introspection). I can certainly see why this wouldn't be someone's tea, but I personally think it might be the best pop moment of the decade thus far, and I say that without trying to reach for hyperbole at all -- in looking at my own ratings, the 2020s aren't brimming with landmark pop releases, but this feels like one. (To be fair, ask me again in a month or so when the initial gleam has worn off).
