The only video I've ever seen of that guy he said he's never listened to Cryptopsy so yea total poser

It's really way more egregious than you'd imagine.
|

No, I do actually disagree with that--it's not embarrassing to have not listened to any particular album while making music in a similar genre.

I had things to say about the whole kickstarter fiasco and how metal culture contributed to that nonsense but it would've been too long of a tangent. the revenue sharing between them and the label was something like 85/15 and people were pissed they weren't happy enough for that. straight chud thinking.

Yes it is lol but also we're talking about bands not individual albums, he's made so much content where he just fully does not seem to know any songs by the hallmark artists of his genre, that's so crazy humiliating.

Someone could make the greatest melodeath album in history in 2026 and I would not care in the slightest if they hadn't heard a second from The jester race or The gallery. It would be a funny and weird fact but it wouldn't really change anything. Who cares?

"Oh you like playing tech death, huh?"
*points bear mace since Canada*
"Name every tech death band."

Look, we can agree to disagree here, it's fine. I just don't think it's "humiliating" in any way to not know specific songs or specific artists; anyone can listen to anything they want to and ignore stuff they don't want to listen to. One does not need to hear hallmark artists to make good music and be a respectable musician; if anything, Dean is an excellent example.
Having no respect for someone just because they haven't listened to specific music is just such a pessimistically critical view, in my opinion. I personally wouldn't want to look at musicians through that lens all the time.

Archspire have some good stuff, that's not in question. Also did not say name every tech death band, again, we're at the level of not knowing any material by some of the top ten most popular and influential names in *death metal* period.
I guess this needs clarified but I don't actually hate him or anything, it's just corny.

Dude can play a riff just hearing it by ear, is funny and rocks being bald, and has a hot wife who, herself, is a beastly guitarist. I don't think much else is missing in his life except for, maybe, a deeper appreciation for Obscura by Gorguts.

anything that pisses off Metal Doctrine Purists is generally a w lets be honest

I think a death metal guitarist should listen to death metal, shoot me I guess.
They do this in hip hop too, you can't just be a rapper and not have any regard or respect for the classics, it does affect the quality of your art but doubtless the other like 5 guys in Archspire listen to the genre they play.

"I think a death metal guitarist should listen to death metal, shoot me I guess."
Why? Other than your preference that an artist know their history, is Dean Lamb doing something wrong by not having listened to certain bands? Does it affect the quality of his art at all? Would he be doing something better now than he hadn't before? Or is it a status/knowledge/ego thing?

I thought he does listen to DM, just not the classics. Of which I'm firmly in the who gives a shit camp on that too.
|
| |
dean is a fantastic guitarist and extremely well respected by his peers and has gone on at length to talk about dm he has listened to. not everyone has listened to every record ever. we take for granted the availability of music right now
|
| |
also this is maybe the most profoundly stupid thing to care about good lord even caring about the number of blades of grass in your nearest park would be a better use of time

Dean Goat is a Lamb
|
| |
So what DM has he listened to? According to Game it sounds like he has barely listened to any DM in his life
|
| |
he listens to six feet under and Tomb Cheese
|
| |
Too Fast To Die? What is this Motley Crue unreleased material?
