Yes, these albums are certainly unique!

I really enjoy all their albums for different reasons.

i think what i will say after a few more listens is that this is their best purely drone record. listening through high quality headphones rather than speakers really helped me appreciate it more, but i do stand by what i said in regards to it being a bit underwhelming considering how brilliant monoliths & dimensions and life metal was.

i'll be honest i don't really buy the idea of this being their sound consolidated and condensed because they've basically made this record before. it may be higher quality, but imma be real, not by much.

Yeah I have OO rated higher not necessarily because I think this one or that one is better per se but OO did it first so gets a certain amount for novelty and staying power. Otherwise they feel pretty interchangeable. Maybe I'll eat my words down the road with added listens though

I love the minimalistic style of this review.

"This is music that unfolds through duration, not variation" - great description!

as someone who has bounced off this band every time ive tried to get into them, this feels like it might be their most accessible one? like theres a bit more going on with the playing? could be just me but makes me want to go revisit their other big ones and see if they click more for me now

^ 'Life Metal' is easily their most accessible

This is veering on a 2.5 for me but the last three tracks end up saving it

I get what you’re saying, but I’m not sure the comparison fully holds. Monoliths & Dimensions is a completely different kind of record – it’s built around arrangement and expansion, not pure drone.

If you find Life Metal brilliant, I don’t quite see why this would feel underwhelming. The approach is very similar, and Life Metal isn’t that far removed either – most of it is pure drone as well. The difference isn’t really in the elements, but in how they’re shaped.

I think part of that difference is that Life Metal feels more open and flowing, whereas this record is more controlled and deliberate. It holds you in place rather than letting you drift. If you’re drawn to the more expansive or “ethereal” side of their sound, I can see why this might feel less engaging.

To me it also doesn’t feel like a return to something like ØØ Void. That record is much more raw and undifferentiated, whereas this feels far more controlled and structured in how it handles space and detail.

To me it doesn’t feel like they’ve made this record before, but like they’ve refined this direction further. The differences aren’t about adding new elements, but about how precisely everything is shaped.

Calling it “basically the same” overlooks that this kind of music lives in those details – especially in the production and spatial depth, which feel anything but minor here.
