he also supported all the horrible wars the u.s. has initiated

death is no fun, certainly not for the loved ones, and it's not their fault in the slighters -- but i'm not gonna pretend he was a good person while he was alive

That's perfectly fair and I'm not trying to infringe on anyone's freedom to have a negative opinion of this recently deceased man. I do think that the most appropriate thing to do in this kind of situation is to keep overly harsh comments private, and share them either much later or in a more appropriate space. I might be expecting too much of a forum, but I like to think we're better than that as a community. I'll probably lift any bans tomorrow, just wanted to make my point known that some of the commentary I've seen is ugly and doesn't put anyone in a positive light.

taking solace in someone's death-even a rival's-is the classic tell of true unhappiness and discontent. a tale as old as time.

Eh, people are gonna cheer when trump croaks and I dont think they'll be wrong for it. Brad is relatively small time compared to anyone that's in this administration though.

To those the knew him, Brad was a light in every room he entered and was considered a kind and friendly soul.

Very nice tribute, Shamus. Very sad to see some fellow sputters using this thread to celebrate someone's death. My views certainly did not align with Brad Arnold's but losing your life to cancer at 47 is something no one should have to deal with including his friends and loved ones. RIP

I understand my comment may come across as harsh and edgy, but after years of being told I need to respect the other side whilst they slaughter millions in Gaza, remove women’s rights and threaten the life of my transgender sisters, I’ve had enough and I will celebrate this man’s deserved fate. I have had family members with cancer. I know how awful it is. But that does not absolve this man from being a piece of shit. I will not grieve these people, because they actively celebrate the deaths of anyone they disagree with, or view as lesser. You can “temp ban” me all you want, I refuse to see this man’s legacy cleansed because he died of cancer and made some shite radio rock that makes Nickelback look like fucking Pink Floyd.

You can celebrate in your own home without making over-the-line posts about it here though, without a doubt

Why would you support a guy who cut cancer research when you yourself have cancer tho, that’s a valid question

The contradictory nature of the American evangelical is a hell of a thing. Hard to preach unity at your concerts when your lead guitarist wears "My pronouns are Fucking. Patriot" and your band created the early-mid 2000s anthem for an American military who embroiled themselves in a needless war. They pandered to a very exclusive audience (including those at Trump's inauguration which they happily lent their support to) that will certainly grieve his passing.

I can appreciate a young man dying too early from a disease that deserves more funding and research to eradicate. But lionizing him and his band over some digestible pop rock is just weird.

No one said you had to forsake your convictions. Just that it's shitty and grotesque to actively celebrate and revel in someone's death. You lament that your political opponents are objectionable, and my ideology probably mirrors yours on economics, war etc. But there's no revisionist history going on here to cut back against. You could have scrolled elsewhere instead of going out of your way to make yourself look like an ass

Unforced error on your part
