Amazing band yeah.

This sounds like a perfectly serviceable modern Amorphis record, and I dig it. Any new ideas on this record are so subtle that I might have missed them first listen, and while the band really feels like they are sticking to what they know, nobody else does it better

Dungeon had same first impressions but it has staying power. More than new katatonia did. Good thing is there’s no weak links in borderland

Agreed, last 3/4 tracks are great. I really enjoy Fog to Fog too, though

Pretty consistently amazing all the way through for me. Bones is probably my favorite song here.

Ha that might just be my least favourite, mostly cause it sounds so much like Death of a King

It’s got that sitar which is a very Amorphis flavor. For me they’re all within a percentage point or 2 of each other- very consistent record

Good album but really feels like modern Amorphis on auto pilot. Tempest and Light and Shadow are really good though.

This album ends really strong, with 'The Lantern', 'Borderland' and 'Despair' especially the standout tracks for mine.
'The Circle' is cool and reminiscent of 'The Way' and 'Tempest' is also quite a nice tune. I still feel this band should incorporate more earthy sounds, go more acoustic, and add more dynamics to their sound, but I welcome some of the folkier and melodic elements as opposed to Halo.
The singles - especially 'Light and Shadow' are songs I'm least impressed with, they feel somewhat standard and safe. Overall I'm pretty happy with this, its not as generic as I was fearing with some of the singles, those last 3 tracks elevate it. But I still think they need to try something different, still have some of that quintessential Amorphis sound, but go more rustic or something, every next album more and more feels like there's a big risk it will just be going through the motions.
I hope they challenge themselves next time, but maybe in this later stage of their career playing it safe is all they really want to do?
