album is fine, better than the last one, just nothing that blows me away
i never considered evoken among the more impressive funeral doom bands but i admire their devotion to their craft for sure and i also like how it seems every album goes for something different atmospherically.
i do think this album could have used some work production wise. it's not awful or anything but it feels like whomever mixed/mastered this didn't have the greatest understanding of funeral doom and the importance of resonance, space and tone in the mix. looking at the dude's track record of mostly producing prog/thrash/hard rock it sadly makes sense that it isn't really his wheelhouse. that isn't a diss to be clear, he's made some great sounding stuff before.
with this though the mix feels very V shaped - a lot of low end and very tinny high end with scooped mids. again not awful or anything but due to funeral doom being sparse compositionally by nature production and tone is more important in my eyes.
though as has been made clear i'm a lot fussier with that sorta thing so i'm glad yall are enjoying this more than me. cool band, definitely essential to the genre and i'm glad they're still around. they definitely have this crypic and solemn sound that can't be mistaken for anybody else.

The production here is most definitely different than previous albums. Really the past few albums have been "lighter" sounding than their earlier stuff so I definitely see where you're coming from. The 90s gothic/death/doom influences are all over this one. Glad you dig it though buddy!

Very very nice. Their most accessible work for sure. I think it might be up there with Antithesis of Light and Atra Mors for me.

The one thing that did stand out for me on this, in terms of criticisms, is that the production did feel very clean for the type of music on display. I kept feeling like if this sounded like it was pulled up from a long-lost storage box in a monastery it would be incredible, but it was very clean. It's far from a dealbreaker, as you can tell by my score, but it's one of the few times I've felt that "worse" production would have been beneficial

I kinda dig clean funeral doom that succeeds in creating atmosphere without lo-fi gimmicks. Not that the latter is bad, it is just artistic choice.

Its definitely the cleanest they've ever sounded agreed. Doesn't sacrifice their maniacal abilities though lol.

Agreed on the mixing. Maybe I need to EQ my setup or something, but this album is offensive to my ears, in a bad way.
